Nothing ever changes here. It's why I want to leave. It's why I'm still here. I'm as unchanging as this site.

[eta] Now that I think about it, it has been during my time at DPC that I figured out what I stand for in photography, mostly by reading & reacting to the opinions of people who I don't agree with. So, thanks for that. I'm grateful.

Ah, but *that* is subjective. Just because it hasn't changed to better suit you doesn't mean that it's not a fully functional system.

There's an interpretational thing. If you decide that X score is the median, and your scores are continuously under that, then it will lead you to believe that you're sub-par. If you understand that the numbers are your index, then after a bit, you find where you stand as the community votes. This is not the place that ultimately decides what you become as a photographer. It merely gives you an instrument to grow and compare your early scores and skills with what you obtain as you get more experience and utilize the resources at your disposal to improve. As long as over time your scores improve, then it's an index of what kind of impression you make on the voters as a group. You learn what works and what doesn't with the voters. Over time, you may find that your scores start to decline, but you start getting comments from people here who don't comment unless something really moves them. Or you start getting tagged with the underground awards. That means something entirely different than pleasing the main body of voters. Ultimately, the site is yours as a tool for learning, experience, developing your style, and hopefully, enjoying the camaraderie as well.

TBH, since the ratings are so subjective anyway, I'd rather see a system where you award "ranks" to the photos that stand out.

That could be done, but that will most likely mean that you'd rip through some images without even looking rather than struggling for a few seconds to assign a value in your mind to the image. Part of how this works is to have you view as many as possible while you vote so that you have the opportunity to get something from the images. This is a participation site, so it's not just all about what you can get from it without giving back if the site is going to survive.

I should take my own point on that and comment more.....

Sounds like a lot of extra work to fix something that ain't really broke.

Yeah, how 'bout NO. That's called FaceBook. If you want to be lazy and have a bunch of people go "Ooh! You're SUCH an amazing photographer!" that's where you go.

This is where you go with the gloves off. You will get feedback you need but that nobody wants. And you swallow it and knuckle down.

You've been around.....you know which way this parade is going. Get to work! LOL!!!

I hope folks are voting as they normally do on each image... so a 6.00 in another challenge will still be a 6.00 in this "Best of" challenge. Same for 7s, 8s, and so on.

Just because there are a bunch of great images, doesn't mean they're worth less, right?

I'm pretty sure this is what many folks are doing (edited to add voting lower). I'm on 4.7 in the FS and 7.3 in another and, I prefer the FS shot lol.

You have rated 106 of 106 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 25 images (23%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.4623.

Working my way up through commenting, goal is 100%.

Not surprised on my score, there were a lot of good shots in this one and mine is too soft in focus, but I submitted to get back in the game and it was one of my favorite shots of the year so it's ok. :)

Don't want coddling.

Do want fairness and consistency. As for "not broken", that too is a subjective opinion. You're entitled to yours.

I consider the marks somehow arbitrary. But I like a lot the comments and constructive criticism.
Did not ask for an opinion on what to post in more than 8 years but by chance I did it for this Best challenge: asked a person whose opinion I trust.

I got almost the best criticism ever, here. As the consequence I decided to go in a different direction and posted something else but these two critiques helped and I enjoyed them more than a bunch of high marks.

Yay!

I miss people saying constructive critiques in comments... not just the good stuff. I appreciate the "bad" stuff more, I think. It's how I grow.

I almost never get that any more. It's probably because they've been not appreciated in the past. I know I've gotten bad feedback on things I point out. So, I don't do it anymore either. *sigh* That's sad to me, since that's my favorite part about DPC... people helping people learn.

Maybe as part of the site upgrade we can let people state their preferences regarding the type of feedback they want, kind of like this example from a non-photographic (writing) site; the category could be displayed below the title on the voting page:
