When was it?

What do you like and/or not like about it?

Do you think you'll ever be able to top it?

I'll go first....Post a thumbnail, too please.

This one: ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/941/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_735156.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/941/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_735156.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

When? October 30th, 2008

What I like? It's in my favorite genre, and I have since got a Blue in that category, but it wasn't enough to eclipse this score.

What I don't like? That was during my "Tommy Topaz" period where I hammered stuff around too much so it's not the best rendition of what they actually looked like.

Do I think I'll be able to top it? In a word, yes. I think that my work here has improved exponentially, I know the site better and feel that I have a better grasp on what resonates with the voters, and I
know I'm going to be dedicating more time in the future to my own personal quest here.

When was it?
- October 13, 2019

What do you like about it?
- Spent three hours with my daughters painting my upper body.
- Hopefully gave the viewing public something unexpected.

What don't you like about it?
- Nothing really.

Do you think you'll ever be able to top it?
- If I chased votes I could better the score.
- Otherwise I've created hundreds of better photos over the years.

When was it? August 2002. My 10th challenge.

What do you like about it? The idea.

What don't you like about it? Poor lighting and bad editing.

Do you think you'll be able to top it? I hope so, but I'm starting to have my doubts. My "Holiday Cheer II" entry was pretty close after 12 votes but it was all downhill from there. My second best wasn't even close.

In August 2013 with a score of 7.1053 - was second place in a RAIN challenge
The catch is that it was taken with a dying Canon Powershot G12 which defects I exploited in a few shots. This is telling me something - perhaps not to use a good camera?

I still like it but got tired of seeing it there - in any case, scoring better than a lightening in Paris in which case luck was the key.

As we stand now at DPC, I doubt that I could top it - a 7 score is rare for me and I have now really good cameras without flaws so....I might just count on good luck

PS. Considering my participation so far - 918 posts - it's quite a shabby state of scores which I compensate with lots of comments that I made in 19 years, 11,691 and counting

When was it? March 2006

What do you like and/or not like about it? It has a little bit of mood to it, a suggestion of a story. It's okay.

Do you think you'll ever be able to top it? Not the score, no. At first, I thought it was part of an arc toward better scoring. I soon realized it was a fluke.

March 2004 :-P

I still like my compositional choice. My processing, not so much. It's oversharpened by today's taste, however I did not receive a single comment saying it was over-sharpened. I think that would be quite different today.

I still like this photo a lot . . . and especially like thinking about getting it! I am grateful to have taken it for a challenge here for a couple of reasons: the challenge, "Looking up from Underneath", gave me the idea and without the topic, I'd not have the image; since the rule set was Standard, no one here ever asks whether I pasted the butterfly in :)

Previous to that, my PB was July 2014. I haven't broken a 7 since then (Sept 2018) and have only had three, maybe four scores in the high sixes; so no, I don't think I'll ever beat it, certainly not if participation here doesn't take a drastic upturn.

Nov. 13th 2010

What do you like and/or not like about it?

Captured some dramatic action inside a WWII battle reenactment, a scene that not everyone has access to. I enjoy the opportunity to participate in this most years. (I was traveling for work last year, so had to miss it)
I was really pleased with how the color treatment turned the smoke to explosions and the leaves into flames.
I think it's good, but not great. I have many shots that I keep coming back to as my favorites over the years. This isn't one of them.

Do you think you'll ever be able to top it?

No. The collective opinion of DPC is pretty hard to please. I think some of hitting a score this high is just nailing elusive broad appeal for people whose skill is usually as good or better than my own.

What I like about this shot is that it was spontaneous and unforeseen. I came upon it driving down a country road. I like the retro feel of it as well with the old Ford pickup. It is one of my favorite pictures. There is nothing I don't like about it.

My goal is to top it. That's why I shoot. I'm always looking for the perfect picture if there is such a thing.

Shot on Feb 14, 2010

What I like: This lake gave a couple of DPCers a chance to get together and produce some shots that became our highest scoring shots back in the day. Because of that I got to meet some great people. ' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' aliqui just made a suggestion to go high key with it that I did not see. Such a great help.

What I don't like: Damn it was cold, dark and damp. But that lake has given me my top 4 scores.

Will I top it: Probably not. I have moved away from the lake and now live in SE Texas and I don't submit to many challenges anymore.

Do I like it - meh, it's a grasshopper!!! Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would do that well - NEVER!!! These Eastern Lubbers are horrid creatures. They will devour a plant in nothing flat. Birds won't eat them (they are quite bitter - NOT that I've EVER tried) - but they will kill them and put them on a board/post to dry then come back later (as in MUCH later)...who'd of thunk that!!! I do like the DOF, Bokeh and the slope of the leaf he/she was sitting on.

I doubt I'll ever top that!!! I still think it's a total fluke. I'll admit that it's a new goal! Maybe the stars will all align one or two more times...maybe (or I'll just buy ya better wine/beer/booze!!! lol)

Shot on 12/29/2019 (same floral)

Scores: 6.4286 & 6.3023 consecutively

I like the illustrative quality of these images, the clarity. My only regret is I didn't run them through Neat Image v8 to soften the petal surfaces. But overall this is by far my best floral. It will be hard to top this.

What I like: It is perhaps a more unusual, yet natural shot of a bee. I was exploring Macro.
What I don't like: The tongue is not in focus. Despite the good score and the PB it only came in 3rd.
Could I better it: Technically yes, I think so, at least I can try :-), but from a score point of view - I am not sure, I doubt it.

Like posthumous said, I thought I had finally cracked the DPC scoring code, but it was a fluke ;-P

This is a thread that deserves resurrecting, not least because we can see some great shots we might not have seen in a while but mostly as I notice some of the more regular forum posters these days aren't present :) Plus it would be nice to see if any of our posters have since beaten their PBs or recently done so.

At the risk of being arbitrary having been back for only five minutes...

When was it? - December just gone. It was on the front page until last week :)

What I like? - As my first picture back, and my first ever ribbon it holds obviously an important place in my heart. I love that the fisherman was captured by chance - I've been back to this lake a dozen times since with and without my camera and haven't seen a single fisherman since. Usually the lake freezes over at the time so it was unusual to begin with. It was serendipitous that he was there, that I decided to change my idea to take photos of him and that it came out so well.

I love the reflections, the shades and the detail. I actually like the final crop in putting him dead centre which was against my usual instincts.

What I don't like?

The edit, now. Not least because I had to make some concessions for DPC (the original is much wider, and I think superior, but I feel the man would've been lost once reduced to DPC challenge size). I've learnt so much on Lightroom this month thanks to being involved in DPC and I've since re-edited this to a final version which has a more blue hue... however I think this was still the best choice for the challenge theme.

One final nitpick would be I would've liked to have had my 600D available, and whilst I was lucky to have the 400D to hand too, the extra resolution would've been nice.

Do I think I'll be able to top it?

Like many others I thought this would be the start of a bit of a run! And whilst I'm thrilled with my comeback scores there's work to do to top it.

I honestly thought my Holiday Lights entry would smash it, but it scored a little lower. However I feel I've just taken my best DPC entry and we'll see it in a couple of weeks, so let's see. The bar was set quite low when I came back as my PB was 5.9 so every week is a nice surprise. Beating that 7.0 threshold would be nice and definitely a 2023 goal.

I wish. So far 2023 isn't off to a good start. I haven't taken any photos worthy of entering in a challenge, not even Extended Free Study, and I've always made a point of entering free studies.

I donít worry about whether something is worth entering or not. If I shoot for a challenge, I enter it, regardless of what I think of it. I figure if I enter it, I may be surprised, or I may learn something. If I donít enter it then I gain absolutely nothing. So why not enter? If I think it sucks, then I wonít be disappointed when it does suck. So what have I lost?

What I like about it: I remember the day, and Iíve had many days like it. I love wildlife photography because I see the stories. I love watching and learning and being a part of the experience. And yet I love my ďartĒ - learning the moments, anticipating what I want, and spending hours hoping that it happens. I saw the incredible, early morning reflections. I love watching the snowy egrets fish -they put on such a show. I was hoping for a straight on - wings straight up shot, and I was lucky enough to get it.

what Iíd want to change is being more on the level of the bird. Itís not possible in that area unless I climb down the bank and sit in the water. But itís not possible at that place. The processing is rather heavy handed - but Iíve tried reprocessing it over the years (because I accidentally saved it in the smaller version, and donít have a larger, edited version). so even though there are things I donít like in the processing, I still like it better than other attempts Iíve made.

Iíll never be able to top it, because scores donít go that high anymore. Iíve looked back, and in the past 4 years of challenges, there have been four 8.0+ shots. Two of which were extended editing. So I doubt Iíd ever see anything near it again. I laugh thinking back to rollover on that night. I had travelled back to MN because my mother was going downhill. At 11:35pm, I was ecstatic - because not only was it 8+, it was actually at 8.5+ and would have been close to beating the highest scoring photo on the site at the time. But in the last 25 minutes, it dropped close to 0.3. Instead of being incredibly excited - I sat and cried. DPC does strange things to us at times!! :D

By the way, this was the highest scoring photo at the time ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/4/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_106.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/4/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_106.jpg', '/') + 1) . '. :D

So iím thinking that the better comparison is: WhatĒs your highest score over the last year?

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3517/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1275108.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/3000-3999/3517/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1275108.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I love the idea, but itís not clean enough for me. I want to get a better shot with better detail. I donít know that I can top the score, because I lucked out because people thought it fit the challenge. I donít believe it would score as high in a regular challenge. But who knows what will happen this year!
