I don't know how it could possibly be done, but when you go to a museum, they give a description of the photo/artwork. Having that context can help you appreciate the piece more.

Some of the photos here have such a good backstory, it would be fun to have challenges every now and then where you can put in more information than just a title. Although I suppose there's nothing to stop people from making up a good back story.

Sigh* Just sometimes you know that something would be much more appreciated if people knew the story.

I'm of the opinion that if the photo doesn't speak for itself, I don't care what the photographer has to say.

I read an article the other day, that's loosely related to this, that refers to the Photographer's Metadata :

Photographers Metadata

Just another way of viewing things.....

I used to think that, as well. But then I went to a few art museums (I usually go to the science and history instead). The descriptions on some added a whole new level of appreciation.

Since we're often talking about photography as art, not just documentary, it seems appropriate.

its interesting to read the different opinions about whether a photo should stand alone .. or if the story behind it is important and relevant ..
personally i love to read the info on a photo after rollover .. and often the title can have an impact on how i view the photo in voting ..
its great when a photo tells a visual story all by itself .. but it can be even more meaningful when you hear the backstory .. especially when it has been created from an emotional or heartfelt place ..
also we put a lot of ourselves into our photography .. it can be a reflection of who we are .. how we view the world .. our strengths and weaknesses .. what is important to us ..
we see a photo .. great .. then we hear about how it was created .. and it can take it to a whole other level ..
its all very personal as to whether we just want the visual or the story as well .. i like the connection with the person behind the photo .. :)

It can also push you away entirely.
With near certainty, every artistic statement I've read on modern art makes me think those people love the smell of their own farts. Even worse is they also claim it's a breath of fresh air.

That's why the pub was invented.

In Vino Veritas is a very old sentiment, with significant evidence for its validity ...

depends on what you mean by truth ..
if a person speaks his truth under the influence of a drug ..
and yet it is different when he is sober ..
then what is the 'truth' ..

And yet many spend our their masked, hidden from others, trying to control what others see of them and how they are perceived, but with inebriation comes disinhibition, and there's a "truth" that reveals itself in that.

i suppose there are many truths ..
and true we all wear a mask to some extent .. some a lot more than others .. and we can mask ourselves from ourselves ..
but when people are disinhibited they can be acting on their more base instincts ..
so much violence and anger can come from drinking alcohol .. dont get me wrong .. it can be a great lubricant to help people overcome shyness and social anxiety ..
but when people act out of anger and violence as a result of drinking .. is it who they really are .??.

there are so many sayings ..
he's not acting like himself ...
he's showing his true colours .. etc etc ..

just makes me think .. who are we .. ??

About a month ago I was going to start a thread entitled "About the Story," but got sidetracked and the moment passed. This current thread has reawakened my idea. Which idea was to use a photo as an illustration for a story one wanted to relate, more a prop than the point in and of itself. As a thread, perhaps more so than a single challenge, people could tell these stories as they occur, or hearken back to special images in their archives.

This is Homer and his "owner." This man, whose name I've forgotten, unfortunately, has had dogs of all types throughout his life. After his previous dog passed away, he visited a shelter and found Homer. He (the dog) was elderly and in failing health -- going blind, deaf and having difficulty walking. The people at the shelter gave him several months to live. As a boy the man had had a beagle who ran away from home, never to be found. Full circle, he took Homer home. This sweet animal has been with him now going on three years. The man is soft-spoken and kind. He said every day with Homer is a treasure.

Rich streetpigeon .. that was the most beautiful story .. and a perfect example of how a photo can be emotive and special just as it is .. but with the added story has been taken to a whole other level ..
and I love your idea of a thread "About the Story" .. :)
