Strange, cuz I can vote on my phone.

any update?
04/18/2021 04:53:52 PM · #228
This "thrilling update" was announced in July of 2019. In internet time, that's equivalent to about 15 years. This is not moving at the speed of entrepreneurship. With my settings, 89% of the posts on page 2 of this thread are over 5 months old.

Seriously, with all the dev, and all the testing, and all the beta previews, and all ... when can we see this replace the current site?

Further, we've watched the site decline in participation, voting, commenting ... remain static on quality ... what's needed is a feature set that will move the needle. What are the features that will move the needle? What are the processes, the marketing, the social integration that will move the needle? I'm sure this sounds negative, and I'm not being intentionally provocative. Just asking.

I diligently put in photos in every challenge (never had so many blues in my life) and comments until March 14th. Gave up after that.

That sounds rather ominous

I think we are all disappointed and a discouraged about the glacial pace of things.

Oh, I don't know. Overall, I kind of like the way the site is still as far as functionality, etc. Sure there are some minor tweaks that could be made, but what's wrong with the hangout as it is now?

Given the rate of climate change I think this analogy is unfair to glaciers ...

I can understand from a pure business perspective, spending a lot of money to redevelop the site with no guarantee of future returns is a big gamble.

I don't personally believe making the site mobile friendly will in itself lead to loads of new members but it could possibly work as one element of a re-branding and marketing exercise.

Even just a fresh lick of paint with updated css/imagery could make a huge psychological difference and that would be a quick win to apply to the existing site and take the pressure off everyone waiting for the "new site"

But long term, the site will definitely need to move that needle!

If just want a coat of paint, there are many addons to do that. Care Your Eyes, Change Colors, Dark Reader, ....
I haven't seen the drab grey of DPC in years now. All backgrounds are black. Looks a million times better.

Or a choose your own background for when your photo is up for voting. Some photos look better on white, some on black, let me choose how mine is displayed.

What would make a huge difference to my use of the site would be:

1. Some facebook imitations -- getting a alert when someone responded to my posts. I'd probably look and respond right away. I think the threads would be used more often.
2. making it easier to simply post photos in a thread. If I want to take a screen shot to ask a question, I need to do the screen shot, upload it to my workshop, copy the image number and then create a post. If I could just paste into a thread, it would be easier to discuss things.

I had suggested the bg color choices at one point also (back when the Web Site Suggestions forum was valid). Even if it was only three choices (Middle Grey, Black, and White). I also like your other two points.

Could also work against you.
Force me to look at a white background, I'd ding you. Black or bust.

I thought you could get this through Thread Options - either Watch or Email Replies? The site isn't that busy any more to need only replies to own posts.

I’ve been away from this place for a while and to be honest, I was expecting to come back to a revamped site... hahahaha... J/k

All joking aside, and this is just an opinion of a guy whose been here on and off for the past 5 years, the single biggest problem with this site is how the hell does a new photographer find this place??? Seriously, Google photo contest, photo challenge, photo anything and it’s no where to be found. There is ZERO social media presence... Aside from Member word of mouth, no one would ever find this place in the corner of the web...

New features would be great, but if you don’t replace members who are leaving, eventually it will trickle down to a top 10 finish every challenge...

At its bones, this site is fantastic for competition and learning. None of that has changed. People move in and out of hobbies and life, it’s important to replace folks who have left or are away. That should come before putting energy into a site refresh.

Just my thoughts, I hope everyone has been well here the past few years and I’m looking forward to falling ass backwards into a few top 10 finishes...

I thought this was the essence of how social media works -- we don't charge enough to run an ad during the Super Bowl ... :-(

Perhaps those more familiar with the various social media sites than I am could offer suggestions on how to better exploit those venues to attract new talent.

What??? No Super Bowl Ad this year? Pfft.... LoL

In a way, Social Media is word of mouth, but on a much broader range.

Look at it like this, You may have 10 friends who you verbally tell about this site, but if you were to share a post from a DPC social media account, everyone who follows you would see it. Some of those followers may in turn share it to all of their followers and the reach just becomes wider. 1 post can reach thousands of people.

Now to be fair, it can take time to build a Social Media presence, but it's something to build on that would generate traffic and members to this website.

There's no cost associated with this aspect of Social Media other than having someone dedicated to posting on it...

Also, Hashtagging posts allows people who are just broadly searching keywords to find your page and posts, so you reach random people searching too...

Lastly, there is an unofficial DPChallenge Facebook page, just never any posts from it.

So if you know about the Facebook page why aren't you posting to it? Or actively urging others to do so?

Honestly, I haven’t been here for three years... It sucks but life and personal matters got in the way of photography for me. So when I came back to this site a few weeks ago, I was surprised at how far the participation had dropped...

One of the points of my original post was how to find ways to replace people like me, who come and go. Social Media was just my suggestion on how to get participation back up.

As far as posting to it, sure, I’ll give it a shot... Ideally for a page to be active, the page itself needs to make periodic posts, but I’ll give it a shot...

Wow. Just checked out the Facebook page. The last post was MAY 2020 (nearly a year ago) and featured the riveting news DPC had changed its hours of operation. If this site is to survive, it needs a real social media presence. This is work and current ownership isn’t putting in the work and neither are we members.

Is the FB page a part of DCP? I was always under the impression it was just a fan page, since I never saw any official post there about the challenges etc.

I believe you are correct -- that's why it's labeled as the "unofficial" FB page. However I was under the impression that post there would still "count" toward improving the site's visibility.
