I think this will be fun as we always should learn from the children, and as they deffinately have a different way of looking at things than us adults. I seen alot of children here on DPC and I think a special challenge "kids only" would be fun and interesting. The ideea comes from this thread To be clear not photos of kids but photos taken by kids.

What do you all think about this?

I would like that.
My son is quite a photographer, he's 11 now.

But how do we know there's no cheeting going around?
As this would be an open challenge (most children won't be a paying member I guess) everybody could open a new unpaid account and enter their photo saying that they are a child....

will the Site Councel telephone the top 5 to see if they are realy young?

Don't kids have to submit a permission form to participate if they are under a specific age?

I'm 53 with a mental age of 10, do I qualify??
10/31/2004 04:54:50 PM · #9
Yes Harrison, I'm sure that you would be included, and that you would do quite well, I might add. You've been a contender with some of your entries already!

So it'd be under 18 then?

I needed permission from my parents via the admins to be a member. I'm fourteen and think that this would be a pretty fun idea. Worth a try, eh?

Not to be a spoil sport, but wouldn't the challenge results just be a "shopping list" for the bad guys? My kids are registered here and have participated, but I make it a point not to identify them and especially so as children!

Sorry, we live in the age of paranoia, but sometimes justifiably so.

So what would the "bad guys" do with a challenge like this?
Photo's submitted by children is not the same as "kiddie porn"..

I have 3 children myself, but if a challenge like this would happen I would let my son enter without problems....

Our whole world is a big bad place, but we can't keep our kids between our four walls all the time.

I think entering a challenge here is safer as playing outside with some friends....

Life is so unfair. : (
Harrison is 15 and has a 20D! Damn.

But I agree a children (18 or less) challenge would be fun to vote and comment on.

The age limit for needing parental permission is 13. That would be one logical cutoff point.

I am not afraid for anyone to find out that Isaac lives in the Bay Area and sometimes takes pictures. However, given the quality of some of the submissions by the younger members, I'm not so sure they can't just continue to compete with us head-to-head -- it is one of the few things adults and kids can compete at on completely even terms.

Along a similar/related line, I was thinking of suggesting having something along the line of a site gallery just for the younger members.

No, I wasn't concerned about the pics. I was more concerned with the list of entries being an easy list of our children. So someone could start sending email messages to those on the list, until they make whatever "friendship" they want.

As it is, NOT knowing when someone is underage protects them better.

I agree in spirit with the challenge idea itself. I guess those who don't want their children to participate will just tell them no.

I love to see a kids challenge. I bet it would bring out the best comments ever. We could even get a "master" photographer from it. Are there any in that age group already? Anyway. It would be fun for everyone, imo.

About the emails. You could probably set up a new email account for the contest. As long as you read them, there shouldn't be a problem. Don't put the kids actual email on the dpc account.
10/31/2004 07:20:01 PM · #22
Your kid's email address need not be public info at DPC.

If a member sends them an inappropriate PM, report it and I'm sure we'll try and deal with it as best we can.

The only logical reasons I can see for keeping a child's general location (and existence) concealed are if they are in a witness-protection program, custody dispute, subject of a government investigation or required to register for the draft.

Otherwise, I think it's important to "live normally" or else we admit defeat at the hands of our perceived enemies, be they the kind who would molest a child or who'd strap explosives on them and send them into a market ....

Even when the email is hidden, isn't there always an option to send e-mail to them? I have my email hidden in my profile, mainly because I don't want it harvested by software from the site.

Again, I am not objecting to this--as long as the risks/issues are out on the table, then there's no problem for people who want their kids to participate.
10/31/2004 08:28:19 PM · #24
That's why you want them routed to you first. Then you can strip off any address and let the kid/s have fun reading them.
10/31/2004 09:07:01 PM · #25
The email could only be sent via the DPC Personal Messaging system. It will go to whatever email address you use to register the child's account -- that can be one which goes to you (not the address YOU use for DPC). You can forward/print legitimate messages.

What are the chances a sexual predator would register with DPC and then send messages within a messaging system where they are sure to be found out almost immediately. I find that a highly unlikely proposition, and even less likely they'd get out of the on-deck circle if they were foolish enough to "try anything."

I agree, it would be different if the child's actual email address were available to the public, but that's not the case here at DPC. My son has been a member since he was five, and I'd much rather he'd start spending more time participating here at DPC again (especially now that he can read his own comments) instead of some of his other activities.
