This is really more of a lament, and I know I really don't have room to talk as I am very inactive anymore. However, I just want to say that boy do I miss the older days of DPC, specifically, I miss entering a challenge knowing I would receive some good, harsh criticism. It's also very strange to me to not have any after challenge comments. I realize this has been discussed ad nauseam, just wanted to get it off my chest.

Maybe you are just a glutton for punishment. In all seriousness, I understand, though I am guilty of not commenting as much anymore.

Since August last year you made just 2 comments yourself on other people images - maybe it would help if you gave to others what you expect the others to give you?

I have also noticed many long term DPCers not voting any more at all while continuing to enter. Very sad and selfish :(

Don't really expect anything from anybody, just making an observation. I think it has more to do with a lack of membership than it does with selfishness on anyone's part, as long gone are the days of free studies with several hundred entries. And I did acknowledge my lack of participation in my post.

I have beem trying to up my game with commenting, It is a bit easier with the smaller
entry numbers.
Given that I am unable to range all over the place to photograph challenge entries due to Health reasons I am able to spend a little more time giving comments.
Like them or not ......

It's a vicious cycle. I cannot count the number of people I've encouraged to join DP. They do, they get no comments and really awful scores and they leave.
We're stuck with each other, so get over it!

Haw! So true. It's a small group, and it is what it is. I'll be around until they turn off the lights.

In the challenge ending tonight my entry has had 68 views, 34 votes and no comments.

You have rated 41 of 41 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 7 images (17%) in this challenge.

In the challenge ending Sunday I have 50 views, 18 votes and one generally negative comment, offering up what I believe is nonsense. Clearly someone has an opinion different from mine, but I'll have to wait three days to find out who the someone is (if I care?).
I can't help that I was taught to only say something if you have something positive (and nice) to say. People learn in different ways. I learn by looking and taking in what's around me. So voting and commenting is actually helping me learn what I like.
I could choose, then, to incorporate what I learn in my own entries. I could also choose to ask questions.

You have rated 37 of 37 images (100%) in this challenge.
Comments to come.

I have no idea why I continue to contribute at this point, voting for winners, many of whom AT BEST take a view at my entry but leave no vote. Winning is not all that important to me, but being nice (and fair) is so the current situation is sort of leaving me cold right now.

It's become more of a social media site.. if it wasn't for General Dicussion I wouldn't bother coming in.

It does happen..and when it does it almost seems worth the years long wait.

I just got a comment on my 'baby animal' shot. It was so thoughtful and constructive and
suggested a crop that made complete sense on something that has alluded me for years.

I think we have to change our expectations about DP to make it work. We'll never go back to
the number of submissions nor comments. All of us have been doing this for so long that it
takes enormous discipline to vote and comment on every challenge. I guess we have to contribute to the
degree that we don't want to give it up.

Dunno.. the person who commented on my shot is anonymous but so appreciated.

Perhaps I'll see if i can get back to more commenting, I remember feeling pretty good about my 5000th comment some time ago.

Voting and commenting are completely optional as is entering challenges. It's neither sad nor selfish if ppl elect not to do any of it. There is no compensation and you can win a zillion ribbons and it will not open any doors for you. In a word, DPC is a place to enjoy and improve your photo skills if you so choose.

Joanna, I so much don't agree with you. For me commenting is a big effort as I am not much of a wordsmith. In the current SC Gratitude I have made a big effort to comment on nearly all images, after all, sharing images and receiving feedback is what it is about. If I posted my images, received your comments and never commented on your images I would feel very sad and think that I am selfish - I am there to take only, I don't give back. That's selfish to me.

Re ribbons - lots have been written about this before with conflicting views but to me they matter. They open doors to motivation, I drive further to take photos, I try to learn Photoshop. I feel elated by a great comment that often comes with a ribbon. It really matters to me.

Today I am going to take some street photos, maybe I will be lucky and finish with an outdoor portrait. I feel extremely uncomfortable about taking photos of people and wish I was more like ' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . i have read everyone's comments here .. and its funny that the subject of this thread is .. 'i'm really not complaining' .. but the general tone has devolved into that .. and i'm going to had my 2 cents worth .. and it will sound a bit like complaining too .. !! .. ;)

firstly .. the voting and commenting is optional .. agreed ... but for myself .. when i get heaps of views .. a medium amount of votes and no comments .. its like .. why .. ??!! .. if you can vote surely you can say something to encourage the person who has gone to the trouble to enter a challenge .. and i understand that its easier for some ppl than others to voice what they think when they see a photo ..
i personally just say the first thing that comes into my head .. my gut reaction .. if its a photo that i'm not that keen on i will look for the positives in it .. i leave it to other ppl to give the less than glowing critique .. as i'm so aware that anything of a negative nature i think or say about an image is only my opinion ..

but it would be really nice to get the encouragement and feedback of comments during voting .. instead of seeing the very impersonal rise and fall of your score .. and when it goes up a huge amount without a comment .. it feels a bit weird ..
like i'm actually eager to leave a comment when i give a good score .. i want to tell the person what i see that has moved me so much .. i feel thats the kind thing to do .. and generous ..

my smile image that ended up with the blue ribbon didnt get one comment during voting .. yet it appeared to appeal to the voters .. like i say .. it has become very impersonal .. when ppl just hit a number between 1 and 10 and say nothing .. especially when its something that they liked ..

i understand totally that if you give a low score you probably dont want to be identified .. lucky for me the lowest score i will give is a 5 .. and i've said it before .. i give a 5 just for entering the challenge .. if its definitely worthy of a brown ribbon then sometimes i wont vote on it at all ..

we are all very different and have different expectations ..
i've been told that to have expectations is to set yourself up to be 'hurt' .. ie. the reason we get dismayed that we dont get the comments is because of the expectation ..
but i feel in some ways when we have expectations we can lift each other up .. to be better than we would otherwise have been ..
be it in life or in here .. with the voting and commenting ..

be interested to hear other ppl's take on the opinions voiced in this thread ..
as it is an area of contention .. :)

Wanting to be acknowledged with a ribbon or participating for the love of photography can be debated ad nauseam here or in the art world.
Leaving a comment is the way to accept both attitudes

On a lighter note, in two of the current challenges I found myself this morning marked like this:

Votes: 24
Views: 58
Avg Vote: 5.6250
Comments: 2

Votes: 16
Views: 34
Avg Vote: 5.6250
Comments: 0

Good for you, I hope you win the ribbon race! ;-)

Also wanted to add.. I'm not a competitor by nature, I think being an "old" soul makes me steer clear of things like competition and team playing.. I'm neither. I prefer to concentrate on the true value of things, in particular nature. Our country is in a quagmire right which gives you an idea of what happens when total power and control are the motivating factors. ;-)

Why do these need to be an exclusive 'or'? Quite a few DPC photogs fall into both groups, for example, ' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Neat loves getting ribbons and great comments, and at the same time she participates at DPC because of her love of photography. Her paid jobs don't give her enough opportunity for artistic expression.

PS I think she is away at the moment but I am sure she will confirm this. She told so when she came back after a break from DPC. That's why she came back.

I think the point is that some can have a love of photography/art without the "need" for acknowledgement (or ribbons) from someone else. DPC is a great place for people with either mindset.

But DPC is a contest site, so there be winners. For me, the ribbons are not telling unless everyone votes (and we've been told that not everyone does, sometimes not even the people who win). Because I feel that way, I vote 100% as often as I can (didn't get all the way thru the smile challenge, sorry ' . substr('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('https://www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Roz,
and I agree with you that commenting should be easy for most of us (and that the comments should be encouraging). I feel more like a "winner" if my entry inspires comments. So I also try to comment on others. If I get comments and a ribbon, it's a bonus win for me.

IMO, this would be a much happier place if all participants would vote and comment as many challenges as possible. What the OP is noticing is the difference between when that used to happen and now. That and the obvious fact that there are fewer members today. But I think the overall lack of voting and commenting is one of the reasons for our low numbers.

And to this

Sad or selfish, don't know, but if everyone opted out of voting and commenting and entering, am I correct in saying there would be no DPC? Now THAT would be sad.

And if you haven't voted or commented or viewed or whatever the baby animal challenge, go do it. It's a fun one.
05/25/2019 09:07:07 PM · #22
You got no one but yourselves to blame. The only people who can vote in member challenges are paying members if they are too lazy to vote or comment; they are some of the few remaining members. I would comment but will not if I can not vote. I let my membership lapse this year because I don't find the site worthwhile as far as entries go. You can kid yourselves all you want, but winning does matter to most of you; otherwise, you wouldn't be complaining so much about losing. The best photographs do not usually win. If you want votes, open voting to everyone, you'll get more votes and possibly more constructive criticism.

If you let your membership lapse because you do not find the site worthwhile, then leave.
As the saying goes pay up or shut up!
05/26/2019 12:20:28 PM · #24
I think everyone who can pay should become a member. But part of me is wondering, if we want more comments and votes why not let everyone do it? Maybe if we opened up voting and commenting on all challenges to all users some of them would find themselves participating with that and ultimately wanting to enter more. So it would be like drumming up business to encourage more memberships.
