You guys are a riot!!

I’m enjoying you all so much!

I am the proud owner of two brown ribbons... both bestowed upon me when I was trying my hardest for a blue one instead.

So be it.

Life in the hOLE is okay.

Dark and easy to nap.

Wow.. no laPSE in great replies. So, I have to get two brown ribbons to compete with Lydia.. or a zillion blues to compete with Roz. Hey Roz.. maybe we could compete for the next brown!

Yes, being ROBbed of proper sleep is pROBably at the root many of our social and physical (and psychological) pROBlems.

I’m not stressed, though... and I’m far from skinny... so maybe you’re on to something!

Speaking of stress, I just did a trial run shooting insects in my patio with Eric's Canon EF 100mm macro lens, which is very heavy.. using manual focus then auto w/flash. So far, not impressed. The INNer details are still lacking focus and I contorted myself in every possible way to get the shots. Only one fly came out so-so.. not impressed. It's the lens and I'm not sure how to remedy it. ARGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the trick is to catch and refrigerate the bugs for a few minutes, then HITch your camera to a tripod and photograph them while they are immobile.

RAF

thats a very cRAFty approach Paul .. but from experience i'd say its easier to shoot them in the wild and probably get much better shots .. as the insects are in their natural surroundings and behaving in a normal manner ..
to Jo .. is the 100mm macro lens the f2.8 .. as that would be the one i have used for 10 years .. relatively speaking its quite a light lens when compared to some of the others out there .. i would suggest moving backwards and forwards to get your insect in focus .. as sometimes the auto focus doesnt quite get it .. especially for extreme close-ups .. its a matter of trial and error and what they say is true .. the so called 'failures' are the groundwork to developing your skill .. :)
ps .. try and brace yourself as extreme closeup macro the slightest movement will put the focus off .. take a heap of shots one after the other .. because what you feel might be a keeper re the focus when you look in camera .. when you get it on the computer you will find its just a bit off ..

The fly that came out okay was alive but the lantern fly was dead so I was able to move him around and I still couldn't get a decent shot. Maybe because he was dead? No dRAFts or anything to screw up the shot. I'm thinking it just takes a lot of practice and a tripod might help (very heavy lens).

Dammit Roz.. now I have to redirect. No bOUNdaries here!

i would really OPT for insects that are alive .. they are much more photogenic ..
altho thats OPTional .. i never use a tripod .. but each to his own .. what works for me might be different for someone else .
but if you are shooting an insect in the wild with a tripod its just too much fiddling around .. by which time the insect has gone ..
keep trying Jo .. that fly you put in was wonderful .. if thats like a first go .. the sky's the limit .. :)

One of the LIMitations in this type of photography is the extremely limited DOF. To counter that you can close up the aperture (probably why ring lights are popular for macros) and shoot using focus-bracketing so that one of them might be "best" and/or you can use focus-stacking software to blend them for greater DOF.

I tried a ring light but the flash seemed to work better. Of course, what do I know.. my skills are limited to florals and milkweed. Bugs are a whole new world and a very challenging one but very ORGanic (whatever that means). Eric mentioned focus-stacking which is something he's experimented with. Yes, it does create much greater DOF.

FORtunately you are getting lots of good information .. I use an external flash .. canon was the speedlight 600EX .. with a diffuser .. also experiment pointing the flash in different directions .. sometimes it's better pointing straight at your subject .. other times pointing up, sideways or even back ..
if I'm able to get a few shots of an insect I'll try and focus on different parts of its body and focus stack in Photoshop after ..
this is a very interesting thread .. so many topics !!

We'll FORgive Roz for not giving us three letters. :)
