Greetings,
Recently my PS 6 started freezing up. What happens is while it is first loading while in the "Initializing menus" phase it freezes up, when I pull up a list of running processes it says that PS is not responding, but if I wait a few minutes it starts up again. Once it is up, it runs incredibly slow, i.e. selecting a clone tool takes about 45 seconds, or enlarging a section of the image is good for at least 30 seconds. As far as I know nothing on my system has been changed recently and I am running up to date Mcaffee Anti Virus, my system is an Intel Celeron I, 400mhz, 256k ram. PS ran fine up until about a week or so ago, and I'm stumped, any ideas from our resident PS guru's ?
Thanks for any help or suggestions,
Mike

Maynot be a PS issue.

PS is very resource-hungry and will need as much free memory as it can get. First thing comes to mind here is that it is using the pagefile.sys (swap file) a lot, as 256MB RAM really isn't enough to run an operating system AND PS. When there isn't enough memory, Windows allocates a portion of the hard drive as virtual memory. If your hard drive is cluttered up and/or has little free space, PS will come to a crawl. A 400 Mhz processor is a bit on the slow side too.

Here is my best suggestion with what you have:
1) Do a disc clean up, removing any temp files, temporary internet files, recycle bin, etc.
2) Defragment the Hard drive.
3) Set your recycle bin global options to use say 1-2% of the hard drive (usually defaults to 10% - right click on the recycle bin for options), as this will free up more space on your hard drive if it's getting cramped.
4) After rebooting, shut down any programs / applications you don't NEED running, thus cutting down on the system's resources.
5) There are also ways to set the virtual memory (swap file) to larger, but for now, leave it alone.

This is all based on the assumption you are running Windows 95/98 as suspected by how much processor & RAM you have. Have you checked how much free space is on your hard drive BTW? Maybe running low. If you are OK with your PC really, get more RAM in it - as much as your motherboard will support. I would recommend no less than 512MB - you won't believe how much faster and smoother it will run.

<edit to add:>

Assuming I'm right about what operating system you are using (Win95/98), you may consider upgrading to Win2000, as 95/98 are no longer being supported for security upgrades/patches. Win2000 has the same look & fell as 95/98, just much more stable.

Here is something else you can do at any time to see what is running and how much memory it is using: Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring up the task manager. Second tab should be processes. You will be able to see what is currently running and how much it is taxing your system. Internet use and music players can often snag up a lot of your system's resouces. Third tab should show you how much of your CPU is being used at that time and will give you numbers as to how much physical memory is being used as well as a cool graphing display in close to real time.

Hope this helps.

Brad's a Geek!
Nice to know I'm not alone!

Agree with Brad but just in case you have a corrupt installation file I would re-install PS. Sometimes you can get an unstable .dll caused by installing another program that overwrites the correct version of a particular .dll (version clash).

You may also want to clear PS preferences. IN CS you hold down Shift-Ctrl-Alt all at the same time as PS loads and then clear your preferences. This will sometimes clean up corrupt preference files and improve how PS works. I am not sure about this key code in PS 6.

Greetings,
Thanks to all who replied, you were all kind of right, after much digging I remembered I had changed USB hubs about the time that all these problems started, and sure enough, there in the background was a process called USBMONIT, apparently playing havoc with PS 6, for if I kill it off before starting PS 6, all runs well. Thanks again,
Mike

Even though you seem to have it fixed it is a good idea to delete the preferences files often, makes PS run much better. Haven't ever used PS 6 but PS 7 works the same as PS Creative Suite with the Ctrl + Shift + Alt while you are loading the program, it should work the same for PS 6.
