Bottom of the Pack Analytical Comments

Every challenge, starting with School Days, I am going to leave these comments on the bottom 10 photos. I will try and explain why I think the photo did not do well in the challenge, which will hopefully result in increased rankings in future photos from the low-placing photographers. I won't give my own personal opinions, but I will use my experience of voting patterns on this site to try and explain why the photo scored poorly.

What do you think of the idea? I've already left the School Days comments, but I won't carry it on if people think it sounds rude or egotistic.

I think it's a great idea, maybe you should practice by going through and commenting on my past contest entries ;)

I'm looking forward to at least one more comment/challenge ; )

Do people who end up with one of the bottom ten photos really not know why their photo is there? It seems a cursory glance at the other entries would tell them volumes. On the other hand the people that land squarely in the middle are the ones in need of the most comments and usually get the fewest.

Mostly this is right ... the fours and low fives usually get the fewest comments.

As one who fairly often (except it seems i'm going for an all time low in the current two challenges) lands in the middle, I agree wholelhartedly.

I just read all your comments and I think this is a great idea!
Maybe if you could comment on the bottom five and the five in the middle, everyone would benefit. I'd love to read your comments on the average, too.

I just read your comments too - really great. I tend to agree woth the others that the middle of the road photos would better benefit from this type of analysis; however I can see how it would be harder to select 10 from the middle. Great work.

I was going to do this as well, then I realised that many of the bottom 10 photos are often effortless or a result of an obvious error. I'm often not sure what to say.

I agree that the middle photos are the ones in need of attention. I've had two bottom 10 images and I would rather have comments on the photos that had potential, but needed tweaking...

Just select 10 at random after you have completed voting.

I for one want to improve and therefore welcome constructive feedback.
I personally feedback on all 1's 2's and 3's every time.

I tend not to give much feedback to the top scores, as I personally get tired of reading feedback saying Great, well done, fantastic, etc.
This is not intended to be a negative statement, as we all like to get good feedback but I sometimes feel there is too much round robin congratulations, and not enough constructive feedback ( I accept it's easy to give praise, but I feel its worth the effort to give feedback with more focus on the lower scores)

My plan is to have a greater number of helpful comments made than comments received

Currently my status is thus:

Comments:
# Made: 211
# Helpful: 163
# Received: 183

So I need to make another 20 'Helpful' comments to break even :)

Unfortunately, if that's your goal, then commenting on the "middle of the pack" is more likely to improve your score. I often find that low scoring entries do not have the "helpful" box checked. I can only imagine that they have read the comments and either won't acknowledge them, or truly didn't find them helpful since the photographer "knew" what was wrong with it in the first place.

As for me, I'll continue to comment as I am inspired to and make a special effort on those I vote low.

I think it sounds like a good idea. Any comments that give constructive critisism are always appreciated by me. I have a lot of learning to do.
Thanx :)

so, konador, you plan to write comments to me that often?:)
10/29/2004 06:53:13 PM · #16
I just received one for the bottom of the pack photo and while its a shame and a blow to be in the bottom ten, it does help alot when comments like konadors are given... while the title of your comment thread may piss some ppl off (after all the truth does hurt) its a really good way to put ppl back into line
I found some really constructive comments from konador and hope he continues the comments ( hopefully not anymore needed towards me though -_-') hehe
thanx once again
