Jeb and Gipper, your back-and-forth here is not productive anymore if it ever was. If you want to keep one-upping each other or trying to get the last word in, take it to Messenger OK? I've hidden the last two posts from you guys.

Awe man. I only pop in once in awhile for the drama any more. Where's the poll for increasing the frequency of the drama?

However, it is obvious that there are some people in this community that love Minimal challenges and look forward to them. Given that, I think going from one Minimal every two months to one a month would be fine to me. Sparing six more challenges a year would still leave me lots of non-Minimal challenges to enter.

I completely agree. I share your attitude toward them, but the poll results are informative. At first glance we might say "well, the most respondents want to keep it the way it is" but if we look at it as two choices, either "keep it the same" or "increase the frequency," then the count is 57 to keep it as it currently is, and 83 to increase it.
Going to monthly seems to be in keeping with what the community as a whole wants.
As an aside, I'm more than a little surprised that there are currently only 140 votes on something that has been a bit of a hot-button issue.

So just what IS the "current frequency"?

In 2018, there have been 5 minimal challenges completed and one in submission, more in 2017

Because I'm a bit geeky and like stats and excel, I have compiled a list of the number of minimal/expert challenges over the years.

The stats suggest that the minimal challenges are in fact more popular than the expert challenges as the average number of entries per challenge are higher for minimal than for extended. I excluded the extended free studies from these stats as there is no comparable challenge for the minimal editing ruleset. However, even including the extended free studies, the average number of entries per challenge is higher for minimal than extended/expert.

Thanks for the stats Sarah. I had assumed that monthly was the lowest frequency that I could vote for, but the current frequency is actually lower. (Guess what? I changed my vote.)

I was out of town when the poll ended. Has there been a change as a result of this inquiry?

Not so far, and any change going forward will likely be minimal ("pun" intended). The current frequency over the past year or so is fewer than once a month and "current + monthly" votes overwhelm the other two options, so I expect we will see a slight increase in frequency for minimal challenges, but not a significant one.

One a month for a total of twelve for a year doesn't seem to be unreasonable.

There will be an open, Minimal challenge tomorrow night. I'm aiming at running one a month. FWIW, there seem to be more topics that pretty much beg for extended editing, IMO.

I heard there might have been some Russian manipulation the polling it's going to have to be re-done. Investigation is continuing though.

I suggested one just the other day that would actually perfectly suit MINIMAL EDITING...

This thread is nutz. That said, I dislike Minimal Editing challenges and often neglect to notice they're minimal editing until it's too late. However, I also dislike Extended Editing challenges due to the degree of PP involved. So, IMO both should be limited to one or two per month.

FWIW, I have lately wondered if we may be stuck in a rut because we DON'T schedule the types more evenly. I recognize that when we ran the poll the numbers overwhelmingly favored standard editing and the consensus was 1 or 2 of the others a month. But then I say to myself, "But that result is skewed by selection bias, because the hard-core forum attendees here are members that are self-selected by their preference for Standard Editng."

Following that line of reasoning, I began wondering "How would things change if we had 3 challenges a week split between the 3 modes?" That is, every month 4 Minimals, 4 Regulars, and 4 Experts. Would this bring back, or IN, members whose tastes are not being catered to? I don't know...

Ideas?

As much as I dislike Minimal challenges, I think this is an interesting idea. Every week you could look forward to at least one challenge that is in your comfort zone.

Well ... it would impact the number of each for the month if those (Free Studies) included make 14 challenges per month, yes? So then you'd have 4 Minimal, 5 Standard, and 5 Extended.
02/27/2019 04:40:54 PM · #100
Wait. Right now there's 11 challenges on the board, either in voting or open for entries. How'd you get 12 without Free Studies?

Without those (Free Studies) right now it'd be 9 challenges active. Are you proposing to INCREASE the number of challenges from 9 to 12?
