I just submitted my first photo and I'm already blown away by the others. How many people here are professional photographers?

At first I felt that way, but many here are amateurs(including myself).
It really helps to improve yourself when you know you are up against some great pix.
I came in 7th last week, and this was only my 2nd time competing.
So, anyone can do well!

First of all, welcome!

There are next to none real professional photographers here... although there is a very, very small percentage that may do a little photography on the side.

If there were any real professional photographers among us, they would be out submitting entries to contests that actually pay something! :-)

The reason most of us are here, and the reason I suspect you''re here, is because we all like photography and want to learn ways to improve our techniques.

Don''t fret too much if you''re first entry doesn''t too well-- it''s happened to most of us here. In fact, take a look at the winners for any particular week and I''m sure you''ll find that just about everyone of them has had several times where they were in the middle of the pack or near the bottom.

I''ve only been here a month, and I''ve learned more in my one month here than I did in the twenty-some years of my life before. I''m certain if you stick with it, so will you...

I've been taking photo's for years upon years, I worked for Kodak once – if that counts – and my digital library runs into gigabytes of pictures from all over the globe. This is also my first challenge - and I'm getting pretty much hammered. I think pro's on this site number very low (if any) but the collective standard is really impressive. There are an awful lot of pictures that are good enough to look professional – so you have given every member a backhanded compliment there – and even somebody who's been taking pictures for thirty years can learn.

Oh, I'd like to add that the comments I've received, though low in number, have all been positive and well thought out. I'm learning from this and enjoying it at the same time – if you're doing badly, remember, there's always next time!!!

Keep going, don't give up and enjoy the fun…

Welcome to the challenge. Participation is the key here and you have taken the first step. Good luck.

WELCOME!!!
Of course there is competition, but for me...this is a great learning tool. This is just my 5th entry and I've only started my venture in photography in April this year - and since joining this site, I have learned a great deal from these great people.

Stay with us!!! Keep shooting.

Hey there! And Welcome ... I too thought the same thing - but then again I thought .. we all have to learn and start somewhere ... I've been out of school and classes for a number of years now and this site is helping me continue my practice in photography ... Don't be discouraged if other photos seem better than yours because you are just starting out - learn from it ... and have fun!
Good Luck!

Don't let it get you down... I'll point to dequinix's website as the perfect example. "And not only did I do well, I actually get first place—a week after coming in 198th out of 218. I'm quite glad."

Just take your best photograph and let it run! :)

Welcome!
My very first submission here I got 4th place. I really lucked out!!! I am about as amature as they get, and that picture was the very first photograph I have ever taken. I have taken lots of snapshots, but never a photograph. I have learned a lot in the few weeks that I have been here. The comments on my pictures have been very helpful. I also look at the comments on other photos in past challenges and that helps me too! So just keep trying your best, that is what I do!

thanks for the replies....I see what you're saying. I'm sure this will be a great learning experience

I just submitted my second entry too after learning how to size the darn things. I got hammered too, but expect that and look forward to learning something new every week. I like being challenged. I can see that participation here is the key as everyone is really helpful. My problem is still having a 56K dial up and the time it takes to vote on all the pics. I seem to have lost two days out of the week...

Wow. There seem to be a bunch of G2 owners around this thread ;o)
Hi, ya'll!!
I think that some of the success here is just luck, and anyone can get lucky.
My highest score so far has come from a last minute submission that I didn't really put much thought or work into.
BTW, I'm 25 and just got my first digital camera a few months ago so I'm far from professional ;oP

Hi Indigo! I have had my G-2 for 9 months and love it! Got the three lenses, the speedlite, and the macro ring. I figure this will keep me busy learning the hobby for a few years. Now if I can just figure out Photo Shop...

You know what sucks is that I have taken some other pictures that would work so much better, but they have to be taken in a certain date.

This is one that would have been perfect for something old:

That's a great photo, calpomatt! But, as someone pointed out in another thread, if we didn't have the time limits on the challenges, it would be really hard for us "newbies" to compete with people who have been taking pictures for years and years. This at least levels the playing field a LITTLE. 8)

I just submited my first entry this week...
My current vote is still on the better side of 5, though it's dropping
:( "go up, go up!!" ;P
It's good to read peoples comments so far and to see that some people really do like my photography. I think I often underate my own work and I often find it hard to critic my own photography... so I hope to get some feed back on how to improve...

As for pro's.... I'm sure there are some pro's here but a lot more
pro-amateurs, people photographing at prolevel but not making an income off it... Personally I plan to earn some money with my camera (I got to pay for it somehow) but then I am also very highly skilled in photoshop to back it up.
