Just cropping the trees from the bottom of this image would have been completely legal under every rule set except Minimal since January, 2004.
However, replacing them with additional sky is probably not legal ...

We don't know what's behind the trees, some hills, a four-lane highway, a horse ... the only way there would be sky is if the trees were located on the very crest of a hill with the photographer lower down. I'm not saying it would be a definite DQ, but more possible than just cropping them off.
I think replacing the reflected trees with sky would get a valid vote from me (the balloons might, too), but my opinion can vary from the majority ... :-) |

I would accept all versions as colourful objects.
If this had been mine (I wish!!) I wouldn't have hesitated to remove the trees.
BUT your entry hits me with a lot more than the others, appeals to me much more than the others. IMO you chose the right one. |

It all depends on how people would interpret/prioritize the challenge -- if they take "shoot a colorful object" to be "take a catalog/product shot of something colorful" then I think your entry fits the challenge better, while your alternate might be considered "better art" ... |
I like that closer crop better, but the wider view is also quite good. |

To be honest, these would have scored you at least an 9-10 from me. I gave you a sorry 5. Sorry, but it was kinda boring. It was a crisp, clean, colorful shot, but just blah. No emotions.
The 2 out takes of your outtakes, have so much humour, so much more of a story. It shows, that you meant to set up a shot, as perfect as you did, but it did not happen, and this is the funny result. It shows, what you meant as a story, and how you failed at it, and that is the greatest story/photo.
The entry, you have a tea pot above their head for no reason. Just kinda floating there.
But again, that is my take on it. ekkkk

I loved your shot, I could immediately understand the work that went into getting it. It was one of my top scoring images for this challenge. The only thing that would have made me score it higher is if the lighting and scenery behind you made more sense with the objects. It was all a little random. |

Thank you both for your input. Hadn't considered submitting one of the the humorous ones. Appreciate the Arch Enemy's opposing views! Ja ja ja! |

Zoomdak, can you share how you did these? I think you suspended them and cloned out the lines. Good job hiding your tracks! |

Threw them into the air and hope they didn’t hit me in the head. My right arm was sore for days after a mug crashed into it. |
