There are 120 entries and so far I have received 110 views and 69 votes for this challenge.

There are 12 hours and 23 minutes left to vote.

I have rated 114 of 120 entries (95%).

It appears that all entrants have not viewed my entry and many have not voted.

Please get out and vote! Thank you!

I'm about to start voting on Bad Hair Day. System says I have 120 images available for voting. Down at the bottom my team has 4 images entered, for which the system actually will not let me enter votes. So when I am done, it should say I have voted on 116 of 120 images. Total you area able to vote on will vary according to how many images are entered by your team. Drop from 121 to 120 might reflect a withdrawal.

Well Iím clear and in doing so I had an epiphany: thereís no doubt about it, people look a lot better with bad hair. Instead of hiding behind our perfect coiffures, we should just let them hang and show the world our worth.

For completeness, I can now report that when I finished voting, the system says I have voted on 117 of 120 rather than the expected 116 of 120. The difference appears to be math that is subtracting the four team images from the earlier 121 rather then subtracting from the current total of 120.

I almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
It was gettin' kinda long
I could-a said, it was in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
And I feel like I owe it to someone

I voted several days ago. I currently have 89 votes on my entry, and there are only 2 hours and 40 minuets left. I wonder why people arenít voting?
07/24/2018 09:27:57 PM · #16
Ha! Interesting. I read the first part of your comment... and said to myself, "Wow! 89 votes! When's the last time that happened! Amazing!"

Then, I read the rest of your comment. Ha!

I love having so many votes. And the comments have increased too!

It was that bad, Shirley. Still not as good as it should be.

Once again the disparity in voting is tremendous.

From the top 10:
Most votes - 96 Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1221086.jpg
Fewest votes - 87 Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1220977.jpg

What makes this disparity even greater is that the entry with the most votes is from a person on a DPL team with 6 people who were prohibited from voting on it, which could have conceivably brought that number up to 102. That's a 15 vote difference!!

Can we please, PLEASE, PLEEEEEAAAASE change the 20% rule so?! With barely over 100 entries people need to be voting for most of them, not just some, and from this you can certainly see that this is what's happening. Flip it on its head and make it 75-80%. I would love to see how results would change if that were to happen, because no one is flying in here and dropping 2's and 3's on a couple entries and leaving.

I know some people don't have time to vote on everything, but in a challenge where scores are averaged across all votes the idea that a subjective opinion (because there are no guidelines) was applied to some images but not most/all means that the results are completely invalid (and I want you to show me otherwise - send me the data). You wouldn't accept polling data if some questions were asked of all voters while others were just subjected to one party or another, so why should we continue to accept results like this? When there are hundreds of votes like there were back in the day fine, 10 vote swing here or there means nothing. This is a 10% difference and that's far outside any margin of error anywhere.

I agree, with the low number of voters these days, someone dropping in and giving a few images 1,2 & 3's can do some serious damage.

And a couple folks dropping in a giving a few images 8's, 9's, and 10's can do just the opposite. Neither should be acceptable, regardardless of numbers.

Seriously, Robert, I would love to look at the raw voting numbers for these challenges if only because if I'm wrong about how much it skews things I promise to shut up about it. Look at the differences in the 6 DPL challenges so far:

Blue:
Top 10: High - 141, Low 134
Complete: High - 145, Low 133
Average: 138
Percentage Deviation: 8.7%

Inside:
Top 10: High - 112, Low - 104
Complete: High - 114, Low 102
Average: 107
Percentage Deviation: 11.2%

Town or City Scape:
Top 10: High 109, Low 99
Complete: High 111, Low 99
Average: 104
Percentage Deviation: 11.5%

Contre-Jour:
Top 10: High 101, Low 93
Complete: High 102, Low 92
Average: 97
Percentage Deviation: 10.3%

Serpentine:
Top 10: High 86, Low 80
Complete: High 88, Low 78
Average: 83
Percentage Deviation: 12.0%

Bad Hair Day:
Top 10: High 96, Low 87
Complete: High 97, Low 86
Average: 92
Percentage Deviation: 12.0%

With a single exception there's consistently over a 10% difference in the number of votes. I'd love to see how the results change as you ratchet that requirement up to 50, 75, and 90 percent. Even if it only changes slightly the numbers show that the current system provides results that are statistically invalid particularly when results are separated by hundredths or even thousandths of a point.

I am by no means complaining about the results of any of these challenges nor am I implying that anything untoward is going on in the voting. But still, when we've got people committing time and energy to producing photos for these challenges, particularly for league competition, it would be nice to not have to scratch your head and wonder about this stuff, particularly when your team may lose a close match.

There is very little likelihood of changing the rules in the middle of the game, as it were.

A complete analysis done after DPL IV concludes and before DPL V might be a good idea, but I don't see any point it over-doing it right now -- just keep encouraging people to vote ...

Absolutely agreed. But the voting level outside of DPL is so minuscule that the people who do bother to vote tend to vote nn nearly everything and the difference between most and fewest varies by no more than 2 or 3, which is OK when the average number of voters is between 50 & 60. I would like to take a deep dive into the numbers regardless when it's done if only to show whether it's worth the effort to change them or not, regardless of statistical validity. Go back a year or two and we're talking about this then, and if it doesn't at least get looked at definitively then we'll be talking about it if and when there is another surge in participation or another league.
