I've voted 100% of those eligible.

Of course, I'll edit to add that you need not add any more votes to my entry. I've received the message loud and clear! Thanks! :-) Do, however, continue voting on all the other entries.

I haven't had a vote since yesterday in the contre-jour challenge. Is something broke? ;)

Ha Ha, I voted on a few challenges yesterday but that one I had voted on a few days ago. So no new vote from me. I think I only got one vote on that challenge yesterday.

Brilliant idea I have had, if I was not sleep deprevied!!!

If you enter, you have to vote, if you do not vote your picture that you entered gets a zero.

Yay, for me coming up with this after 6 hours of sleep in the last 3 days!!! Yay!! I rock!!!

ummm lol

But, seriously, think about it,

1 point for picking up the camera
1 point for getting out of the house or setting up
1 point for editing

SEE this get's rids of all the 1 and 2's

So why not spend several moments on voting.

It takes less time, than the 3 points listed above.

So if in DPL, you do all these steps, then do not acknowledge what other people do by voting, then you get zero as well.

In this sleep deprevied state, this makes 197.09.014962% sense .

An idea suggested in various forms many times over, and always beaten into submission.

The heart of the problem is that people either refuse to judge others work while wanting theirs rewarded, or somehow feel that by scoring someone else's work honestly it can make them a bad person. For instance, somewhere on here there was the suggestion that if you don't like someone's photo then don't give it a score, just score the ones you like. Fine, then go post likes on ViewBug and Instagram, this is a challenge site and at the moment one with a competition going on, so voting is important but voting honestly on everything is even more important given that the lack of a vote has ramifications to how teams finish.

I'll give a couple examples.

1. Look at the Top 5 in City/Townscape. The 4th place finisher got 109 votes, the 5th place finisher got 99. The 5th place finisher finished 0.02 points ahead of the 6th place photo with 5 fewer votes. Now granted during DPL your team members cannot vote and that means every participant photo could have at most 6 fewer votes than that with the most, so 10 is out of line with that and that holds here as the entry with 109 votes is not a part of DPL. But still, the 6th place entry has 5 more votes and a slim margin of difference and very well may have finished Top 5 if the four or five people who didn't vote on the 5th place entry did. Even if the votes were in line with what is already there.

2. In the Blue challenge my entry finished 7th with a 6.4348 score. The 4th place entry had a score of 6.4752, just 0.0204 ahead of me. My entry had no 2's or 3's given but did receive a 1. Without that 1 I would have finished 4th. My reason to post this is not faulted the person who gave it a 1 but to say that if the vote that pulled my entry out of HM position was withheld from other entries that finished ahead of me because the person felt uncomfortable "hating" the image then how is that fair to anyone who finished behind them?!

I could care less about normal weeks and normal challenges, but during DPL if participants are posting photos then they should be required to vote or their images are disqualified from entry. It's like saying you'll play softball at work but you only want to bat and have someone else run the bases for you.

I did not even notice that , until you pointed it out.

I got 94 votes at 5th, the 4th place got 100 votes, Blue winner got 98.

That is too odd to even think about. Never even crossed my mind that everybody didn't have the same amount of votes on their entry's.

That's been my biggest beef about the voting - you can vote for some but not all images. And I've had some major beefs about voting. They'll say that people run out of time or that they don't like to give negative votes or that they paused and didn't come back.

Right now the guideline is that your vote counts if you voted for at least 20% of the images. To me that's garbage and precisely backwards. If you didn't vote on 80% or more then the vote gets tossed.

The 20% rule should probably be updated. I'm guessing it has just been carried over from way back in time when some challenges had over 600 entries. Voting on 20% then is the equivalent effort to voting on 100% now.

Regarding voting ... not everyone has speedy internet access. We only have DSL and the larger number of challenge entries makes it difficult to sit down and get thru all of the entries. Very time consuming.

Voting is a week long. That's just over 30 images a day for the two current challenges in DPL. Budget the time if you want to play. They've kept the images on this site ridiculously small for just the reason you're mentioning.

The images are larger than they used to be, and my internet hasn't changed. :-) ... and generally I'll find time a couple of nights per week, certainly not every day. Just saying. I actually find it faster to vote using my phone, but that's difficult given the screen size.

Encourage voting? Of course! For one thing, there's no better way to learn and to improve, in my opinion. And for another, I do feel I owe it to others to participate in this way. And I will vote 100% of the entries I am allowed to vote on in all the League challenges. Yes, I usually do it a few a day, trying to "finish" with at least a full day for review and bumping and, hopefully, commenting (I know I should do more of that).

But

????

I, for one, am just grateful so many came back or joined to play so that we can even have the league. Please, let's encourage rather than trying to come up with ways to discourage.

FWIW - I've voted 100% (minus team members) on all DPL challenges thus far. It's not been easy. I just wanted to point out (to Jake) that it's not an even playing field for all and there could be valid reasons that some people haven't voted.

Folks, I've heard every reason why people vote and it's all selfish when it comes down to it, because you're willing to allow your work to be scored but not willing to put in the time, for whatever reason, to do for others what a hundred people did for you. How does recommending that there be a voting requirement in any way "discourage" voting except to maybe point out the selfishness of those who do not. And sure, outside of DPL perhaps commenting on images may even be a more worthy goal, but within the context of it if you're getting scored then you should be giving them.

If we're "lucky" enough to have enough people come back to participate so that we can even have a DPL (I was one of them as were other members of my team) it speaks volumes to me about just how long lived that participation will (ie. won't) last once this is over. The same issues that were talked about when I first got here, when there were regularly 60-100 entries in challenges and always over 100 on the Free Studies, are still the same ones that get constantly brought up and never address for the same reasons they weren't years ago, and maybe that's at the heart of why people leave.
