Don't you think that fat people can be pretty? Beautiful? Sensual? Sexy?

Two awnsers:

1) Yes. So go and try to convince a friend, a neighbour, the girl in the supermarket that is a litle (or a lot) extra wheighted to pose for you. A portrait, a sensual nude, an artistic nude, a simple picture of her/his beautifull eyes, anything goes. Anything beautifull or sensual, and that everyone can see that it is a "non skinny" person.

2) No. You belive that sensualety is only present in anoretic kind on people and "fatness" is another word for ugly, prime-minister, politician or other things that can't possible kick you out. So work around it and put your mind into it to reinvent sensualety and beautifullness.

And a promiss here... Just maybe... A self portrait... :)

Just at least think about it.

And if have some images to show here, to inspire some of the less belivers, be my gest.

I disagree with Tranquil. Most "fat" people dislike the term "obese".

I like the idea of the challenge though! It would be a nice exercise, especially for the less open-minded out there.

No offense taken. Nice to see that you are open minded. If there's something that has to work in photography is the mind of ho's holding the camera, isn't it? So having an opened mind is a big step forward.

Actually I believe obese is a medical term. I think as a person gets farther above the 'ideal' weight for their height, they are categorized as 'overweight', 'obese', and 'morbidly obese', in that order.

I think a challenge that shows the beauty in any type of person that would not normally be considered "beautiful" (by the media anyway) is a better idea. A kind of 'against the stereotype' challenge. I think it is easy to find something attractive/nice in just about any person. I don't like the idea of just targetting overweight people.

The Eye's Beholder - Find beauty in something one would not normally think is beautiful. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Great idea! I haven't taken a self portrait in a while!!!

Coming for a fat fooker like me, I like barbie type women. But it's ok that I'm kinda fat since I stopped smoking, and I'm a man.

Very nice idea Nuno. As a fat person (not a politically correct one, by any means) I like that idea. Obese is a medical term and it is determined by Body Mass Index, or BMI. The categories range from slightly overwieght to Super Morbidly Obese. I was in the Super category until this past year. I had an RNY gastric bypass on November 11 last year and have since lost 120 pounds. Now I'm only Morbidly Obese, LOL!

I have an online journal devoted to this journey that contains lots of photographs. I lost the page that had the more recent photos before I had the surgery, but I created four collages for the important stages of my life and the fourth one contains a lot of those photos if anyone cares to view photos of a lovely fat person. :-D Yes! I'm immodest enough to consider myself a beautiful fat person.

On a side note, Nuno, I'm Portuguese-American on my mother's side. She was born in Sao Miguel, Azores. My dad is half-Mexican and half-Anglo/Scot/Irish mix.

Part of my journal in collage form

I much prefer words like "voluptuous" and "curvaceous" and "womanly" rather than "fat" and "obese." ;o)

Sounds like a good idea...I like the way Tranquil worded it best. :o)

I'm saturated with images depicting 'perfect' people with vacuous faces in contrived poses. I'd welcome anything departing from this artifice. It would be great to see real people for a change.

I'd love to see the comments on the does not meet the challenge photos...
"He's not fat enough"
"that butt is way too small"
"not big enough"
"too skinny"

Same here, half Portuguese (Azores).. but on my father's side. Different island, though :)

It's always interesting to me to discover that someone from other than my area of the US (with the exception of California) is Portuguese. I don't know why...I guess its because I spent a couple of years as a kid living in Arkansas where, when asked my ethnic background, I would be treated to incredulous replies like, "What the heck is Porkucheese!" Something about this ignorance gave me the notion that all the Portuguese in America were situated in Southeastern Mass and Rhode Island. Imagine my thrill to discover that Peter Sellers, one of my favorite comic actors, was Portuguese.

Now we might have a Portuguese First Lady! (God willing!)

Anyway, I digress. I'm all for Rubinesque nudie shots.

As a child, I used to annoy my father to no end calling by him "Porkajeez"... funny seeing a similar mispronunciation. While I was born in Montana, I have to fall into the California category, as that's where my parents met and my mother's from. My father always insisted on having Portuguese foods, so relatives would send them to us from California, since there was NO Portuguese population in Montana. Here in Oregon, there is a.. small population, and some things are available in stores, though as specialty items. Nothing like California, though. :)

I can relate a bit to your surprise/interest on the location thing, though. I had no idea there were east-coast Portuguese-Americans for years... I think the first time I realized it was when I saw Mystic Pizza. lol :)

But back to the subject at hand... an Eye of the Beholder challenge would be great! The only thing I can see such a challenge suffering from is people voting low because they don't find the model(s) appealing. However, I suppose that would in itself be part of the challenge. I'm always looking for another excuse to take a self portrait. ;)
