In that perfect world they talk about in hushed voices on Sundays we wouldn't need titles to explain our photos, but like lisae infers, without the title, how are we, who are not of Goya's world, to understand what's happening in his painting. Now I read we have 3000+ members, and in another thread I saw pins all over the map. I think a title can bring us closer to the same page. Or, as hokie says, at least have some fun with it:)

Personally...I believe that changing your title (shortening it) to suit the rest of the voters is about the same as trying to please them with the photo you shoot. I shoot what I like and if others like it...great. If they don't...that's great too. You can't please everyone...but who is to say you should restrict someone's need to give their photo life by giving it a title? I go with Hokie...it is somewhat like naming your child. It's your creation.

If you don't like it because it's got a long name...vote it down. If the photo is so extraordinary that you can view it without even seeing how long the title is...then you will vote it accordingly. (One would hope)

Just my buck fifty.

The length of the name is not really the issue....

John..I think you know what I meant. The long name is going to refer to some type of explaining going on about the photo...otherwise, why do you need to write a book about it? This will be argued forever. I've got PMS and I'm tired...so I'm done. :)

thanks..k

as right as i think lisae is (basically because i was flamed alive for one of those entries), i think that

(1) based on what i''ve read in the forums this past week, some (if not a lot) will VOCALLY vote down entries that put the photo into context with the title,
(2) some people who are on the receiving end of that kind of "lambasting" will vote the same way either because they think that''s the way to go or they want to keep themselves in the race, so
(3) this kind of thinking is self-perpetuating

what can we do? nothing, perhaps, except to state with in the "official" challenge statement that the entry should consist of either a "creative" interpretation OR a straightforward "non-titled" photo --- it seems that all the challenges invite their own special nitpicking, but we could reduce the "IF NOT FOR THE TITLE" comments dramatically with a more clearly stated topic

First, I am aware of my neophyte status...

That said, my philosophy on evaluation photos with titles is based in their coupling. I feel that if one titles a photograph, then the title becomes a part of the photograph itself. The photographer should apply the same thought that went into shooting the subject to the titling of the photo. The title should, at the very least, be consistent with the subject, and at best, simply reinforce what's already there in the picture.

Yes, it is possible for the title to destroy my ideas about the physical photograph. It's also possible for a title to save a confusing composition in my eyes.

My semi-recent attempts.
