I'm really quite suprised that this image:
Was ranked lower than this one:
I really felt the first image to be the better capture. Partially because I was shooting for the picture, rather than to capture the idea of being unpredictable, but also because I hoped my lighting was improving. Any thoughts on why the second photo fared better? |

probably because of the overlap of the middle two images. It's disconcerting on the eye to have an arm going through a head. It also breaks up the flow of the image, whereas in the original, it's a natural progression from rear to forefront. Also, the tonality is consistant.

Don't like the overlap? Hmm, I kind of thought that was interesting to use the transluscent effect of the black to bring her through herself, and create a circle of focus. I can see how the arm there is undesireable though. Thank you for your feedback. It's the only way I can improve! |

I like this image more (more interesting) but I do find the "overlap" more cluttered. In particular, I think this would have been better without the lower "closeup" shot. |

I'd say too reddish color on the first one also downrates it. BW works just fine on the second one. Otherwise i agree w/ atsxus. |

Don't forget though that in each case the competition was different.
I love both shots, and gave both a 9 ... they both really appealed to me.
Were they in the same challenge I would have expected them to rate in the order they actually did.
What surprises me though is the magnitude of the difference. I would have expected the lower rated one to only be marginally lower than the other, but there is a huge gap between them.

Exactly, and it's true, different competitions are different. I hadn't expected to win, I'd just hoped to do better than I did last time, not in place, but in reception. Thanks for your feedback. |

Yeah, I had a B&W version, it just didn't seem to 'pop' as much as the color. The fact that it was really, REALLY cold that night gave their skin a reddish hue, which I like, and don't like at the same time. Thanks for the support yura. |
