wasnt sure if this was the place to post this ..??..
it's copy and paste of a discussion i was having with another dpc member about the low voters..

it's really sad when ppl vote 1's and 2's on a wonderful image ..
of course we all have our likes and dislikes .. but it appears that the ppl who are voting like that are doing it just to be dick heads ..

so i was thinking of appealing to the SITE COUNCIL .. even though i'm fairly sure its been done before .. and asking them to re-think this 'situation' ...
i personally know of a few members who have left dpc because of this sort of behaviour .. and i'm pretty sure dpc would prefer ppl not to leave because of something that could possibly be rectified .. not sure how .. but i'm sure there'd be a way .. giving a reason why you voted a 1 or a 2 would be a good place to start ..
and i think a person deserves at least a 3 for taking the trouble to enter the challenge in the first place .. ;)

if enough ppl voiced their opinion on this maybe something could be done ..
i have a feeling there would be a lot of ppl who think the same as us ..

JUST TO CLARIFY .. WHEN I CALLED PPL DICKHEADS FOR VOTING 1's and 2's ..
I DIDNT MEAN PPL WHO HONESTLY THINK THE PHOTO IS SO BAD THEN THATS THE SCORE IT DESERVES ..
I WAS REFERRING TO PPL WHO GIVE OUT THOSE LOW SCORES BUT REALLY BELIEVE THE PHOTO IS WORTH A LOT MORE ..

I think this issue has been hashed out a zillion times over the years. Best counter-argument is that to be consistent, you would have to call out the 9 and 10 votes on "crappy" images. There used to be a message that popped up when you voted 1 or 2. I could see bringing that back just for the 1 votes - especially if you could limit it to keyboard 1 votes because of this issue (accidental 1 votes).

I'd personally prefer to throw out the top 10% and bottom 10% of the votes or isolate and toss the outliers. But it is what it is and we can hash it out again, but not likely any consensus will come out of it, let alone actual implementation of a change.

ok ken ..
thought I'd give it a bash .. ;)

Never hurts to bring it up and I'm not saying it shouldn't be brought up. I probably sounded cynical, but that wasn't the tone I intended. Always worth talking about anyway - maybe some of those low-voters will loosen up after reading these discussions. :)

you didn’t sound cynical at all ken ..
I’d forgotten about the voters who give 9’s and 10’s to crappy images ..
and my first thought about the low voters loosening up after reading this .. is that they might get even worse ..
I mean the psychology of ppl like that .. it’s like they are out to be trouble makers .. seeing this they’ll probably be patting themselves on the back .. :(
your 10% sounds good .. but I’d hate to lose a vote of 10 if I got one ..!!.. ;)

I gave up voting many years ago and sometime soon hope to lose my virginity.

What’s a great photo? Everyone has a different idea of that. Let’s not try to stop people having their own opinions

haha .. but you are truly a child prodigy.. if what it says on ur profile page is true .. you started entering challenges before most babies can even talk ..
so if that’s anything to go by the virginity ‘problem’ should be a thing of the past quite soon ..
that’s assuming of course that you have reached puberty .. ;)

I totally agree about ppl having their own opinions .. and not to be argumentative .. but some absolutely wonderful photos get the lowest score you can give .. we are asked to be as objective as it’s possible to be when voting ... realising that even when we are being objective we bring our own likes and dislikes into the mix..
I do believe that the ppl giving out those 1’s and 2’s .. to what most ppl think are beautiful images .. are not doing it from a good place .. and it probably isn’t even their honest opinion of the image in question..

Just because a lot of people like something doesn’t mean everyone has to, neither does it mean it’s a good image. People give out ones or twos for different reasons, nobody should need to justify their vote, either low or high

MHO is a 1 vote is reserved for a DNMC.Not poor quality. I rarely give a 1 vote but have for a beautiful image because I thought it was a DNMC.

well Sarah 21_F.gif salmiakki.. i guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one .. :)

I find a 10 point scale is sometimes insufficient to differentiate between images. By the time you’ve sorted the images into clusters where the fives are ‘better’ than the fours and the tens ‘better’ than the nines, the twos are necessarily ‘better’ than the ones; and sometimes finer granularity would be easier for me.

Having said that, I don’t think I’d ever give a ‘good-but-dull’ shot a 1.

The trouble is - what does ‘good’ mean - I think you need to do more than just expose properly and have it in focus...

it always comes down to personal preference like 21_F.gif salmiakki said ..
its just that i have never felt justified in giving anyone less than a vote of three .. just entering a challenge gets that from me no matter how 'bad' the photo is ..
and i truly believe that we all need encouragement .. so its not just about being 'right' or seeing a photo as 'good' .. its also about seeing the positives in an image and voting on them ..

I think that’s the crux of the issue Roz. (Bold added by me) You can vote how you like, but don’t try to make everyone else vote how you do. Each person is entitled to use their vote the way they want to. It’s all subjective. As long as each person votes consistently it doesn’t matter. The popular images will always succeed even with a few one or two votes.

One possible alternative that has been mentioned before that is used on another site is to not have a scale but just votes. IE: you just select any images you think are worthy of a vote. You still end up with placings and all votes are equal. That’s how we pick heads of state and lord knows that never goes wrong.

i understand Sarah .. and i don't really expect ppl to be like me ..
its just those votes of a 1 or a 2 can often seem a bit ruthless .. especially on an image that can be quite beautiful.. to me .. and to most ppl voting .. evidenced by the other comments and votes ..
i don't know .. it sort of lowers the friendliness of this place seeing those votes ..
and once again i don't think everyone should be like me .. but i believe ppl do need encouragement.. and i don't think a vote of 1 does that ..

On another site you pick ten favourites and put them in order. It works okay but I never find it easy to do.

Threads that tell people how to vote always make me giggle like a little school girl. I have given 1's to images that made the front page and I have given 10's to images that were on the last page. I also find it very offensive to suggest that me giving a 1 to an image that made the front page was because, and I quote "doing it just to be dick heads".

Lets say we do away with 1's and even 2's, would not 3's and 4's become the new 1's and 2's? Sure the average score received would go up, but the giving of a 3 would imply the same as giving a 1.

I guess you would think I was a "dick head" to learn that I only ever give out one 10 in a challenge. Well, there have been I think 3 challenges where I have given out two 10's because I couldn't decided on the winning photograph. Why do I only give out one 10? Because this is a contest and to me there can only be 1 winner and only what I feel is the top image in challenge gets the 10, the rest that are close get 9's.

Since this is not my first round in this discussion I suspect that in reply someone will bring up my vote average...…………………… FYI, it is 4.9989. Which honestly is about where it should be given that well over 1/2 the images in any given challenge are average at best in my opinion.
