So, say someone had a 7D, and it had not had any updates from the Canon website in 7 years. How would one go about getting 7 years of updates into camera. Would you just go to the site, then plug your camera in and hit any random button saying update and hope it fills in the blanks?

Asking for a friend, as they always got the camera shop (now closed) to do her updates, cus she was scared she would screw it up. ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaa oh dear

I didn't actually realise that you can get updates for cameras... i have a 5D2 and 7D2 and have never done anything with either. Going to sound really thick and all (not hard, really) but how do you update a camera? And is it worthwhile?

She would go to this page, choose the version for operating system she is running on her computer (Mac or Windows) then download the associated file. The download contains both the firmware update file and the instructions.
It is not necessary to apply intermediate updates, only to apply the most recent. Now, all that said, unless she is having problems that the update will resolve, or there are new features the update provides, she should consider the update optional. Nothing wrong with running the old firmware if things are working well. As an example, my old 5D is still running firmware dated 2005, as it cannot be updated due to a hardware issue.

Okay, said friend, remembers now , why I get my updates done by a camera shop. I am as thick as brick s**t house.

I also remember why it took me about 4 years to learn Photoshop. I am hopeless at following directions, even when I do follow instructions.

I am staying old school, no updates for me. Thank you for trying though guys. This is going to be a steep learning curve again.

(Now off to update Photoshop CS2 !!!!!!!

((Heheh joking))

I updated my 7D after about the same number of years - it turned into a Sony mirrorless!

98% of my entries here are edited using a version of Photoshop released in 1995, on a Mac of the same vintage. You don't need to update unless you're dissatisfied with the results you get using what you know/have.

Welcome back!

Same for me with Nikon. I would never go back to a reflex camera.

No worries, Juliet - I had a 7D for a long time and regret not keeping it as a backup. Loved that thing.
