And after three weeks of having a new camera, I was able to get out to one of the local botanical gardens and shoot. I decided to shoot in full auto mode (start easy then get harder). Some of the pictures actually came out nice. Fuzzy is good, right?

Man, 200 pictures goes fast.

I shoot in Jpeg Fine. The next step is to look over all the photos and pic my favorite dozen or so I want to edit and show you guys. What would be the best way to do that?

How fun!

I can't wait to see them.

You can upload them to your "Workshop" here on DPC and then link to them on a thread.

To do that, you'll need the image number (will be listed after the = sign on the image address (shown in your browser address line).

Then, just use the little icon above your text box that shows a photo of a large screen and a smaller screen (third icon from the right) and enter the image id #.

After looking at them close up in Lr. Sooooo, many are not good. I like some of the ideas I had in my head. I'll go back and take them again. But, the focus was way off. Lack of depth of field. Shooting flowers and trees require more attention to detail then I remembered.

Not sure what to chance next time but changes need to be made. Not sure if auto focus was a good idea with nature.

I'll post a few and you'll see what I mean.

But, On the bright side. I now understand why Lr is an important first step. Narrow down to the few I LOVE then adjust in PS.

Steve

For you Ja - Anything

My favorite so far is the first one. I may go back and take a bunch more.

Hi! I used to walk the botanical garden here, shooting flowers. Loved it. I have a tip for you. Get a big, black golf umbrella (WalMart $5). When it's closed I used it like a cane, a mono-pod, & to clear my path of spider webs. When it's open I used it for background, to block the wind, to create shade, to shoot through when backlit, to protect me from low-hanging branches/spider webs, & yes, occasionally to shelter from actual rain. Very versatile!

It ain't that more different but the possibilities of post processing in LR are way better. You might not like it at the beginning as the photos will lack the saturation, sharpness etc of the jpg but you'll get used in not time.

You can always shoot R+JPG

Have fun!

I really like the 3rd and the last images. And I heartily endorse the RAW approach. I was like you for years until I took a local class and saw what I could do with a RAW image vs a JPEG. Literally night and day.

I went out again today and forgot to change to RAW

Next time for sure.

You have a nice eye -- the images have a point, a reason for being addressed rather than grabbing at candy. My favorite is the next to last one, 0092, of the dead leaves gathered in the valley.
Second the advice to transition to RAW, you'll be happy you did. Keep up the good work!

Very nice if you to say that.

I'm loving this suggestion!

"to shoot through when backlit" Help me on this one. I don't do lighting.

Hello Nikki! I don't do lighting either. One afternoon, I was shooting lilies at the botanical garden, using the umbrella to create shade. The angle of the sun was low, so the umbrella was on the ground, right up against some lilies I wasn't shooting. On impulse, from the shady side of the umbrella, I took a shot of the umbrella, with the sunlit lilies behind it. I liked it so much, I kept on doing it whenever conditions were right. Umbrella Variations in my portfolio will show some results, some more PP than others.

What a wonderful photo collection, Annie (pixelpig) -- Umbrella Variations! Can't help it, must yield to that overused and debilitated word - awesome. Flowers as hummingbirds, tropical fish, probing dreams. And your comments on the individual images are also enchanting. The evident sense of play and discovery are inspiring. This makes me want to learn the Photoshop that I'm paying for but which has lain dormant.

Hello Rich! Thanks for your 'awesome' comments. :)) I'm sorry you haven't ventured into the wonderland of Photoshop. I have spent so many happy hours using Photoshop to exercise my imagination. It's versatile, powerful, easily the most fascinating set of tools I've ever used. And there's a vast library of help & tutorials online. Do yourself a favor & try it out someday!

If in RAW is the same as in the buff, that should prove interesting.
