and NO comments? never had that happen to me before..

Comments are a funny thing. Everybody wants them and nobody wants to give them. There is an observation that if your image is too low, you will hardly get comments. A very bad image, like mine, has gotten five simply because it is that bad.

However, the object is to help each other and help those folks who are low in the ladder. I mean, the low score images need more comments to help the photographer. What is the point of praising over and over the top images.

Well, this thing fluctuates and not all challenges are the same. I guess many members burn out and take a rest or a break. But things do change without notice.

You bring up a good point graphicfunk , you have a great comment made to comment received ratio. If my calculations are correct you have a 3.67:1 ratio. Thank you for your comments. We should start a thread on comment ratio and strive to get people to get to the 2:1 ratio at least.

Speaking of which Delphi00 while it's a good point that mid to low scoring images are the ones that can benefit most from comments I can't help that notice that you've received significantly more comments that you have made. Almost twice as many in fact.

how is my ratio? :)

For my part, I commented on 22% of the images in School Days and those include photos I scored lower.

So far, I've received 9 comments for my entry--all positive except for one which seemed more neutral. My score for School Days is hovering around 5.32.

I've gotten 7 comments for my Night Shot II entry. Mostly instructive comments that pretty much ran along the same line---'lacks a focal point' which is likely true. Anyway, I appreciated them.

I would say very well
4.79 to 1

When I viewed this thread it made me go back and check my profile. I thought I was making my fair share of comments but to my surprise I was only making 1.68 to 1. I don’t think that is good. I would like to challenge people to strive for a 2 to 1 ratio at least. Like riotspyne and graphicfunk and many others.

Well.. I have 431 comments made..
268 received..

so That's not quite 2:1.. but..
In my defense, I racked up 300 of those comments over 3 or 4 challenges.
I just simply burnt out.

I'm trying to limit myself to approx. 20 comments per challenge now :)

(and varied misc. comments on pictures in portfolios, et al.)

My 'comment ratio' is pretty good, but I'm going to suggest that it doesn't mean squat...

Admittedly, I'm guilty of this as well but let's face it...most comments aren't that helpful. "Nice work", "Interesting choice", "Good shot"...this stuff doesn't help me improve my photography!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate comments but I wish they were more critique-oriented...

I am going to try something new:

I will try to comment on 20% of the images (the first 20% that I vote on - to keep it random) and I will truly try and give the photos a quick critique...

That's why I'm such a pain in the butt on the forums...constantly posting photos for your review and advice. I need to learn. Sure, I love compliments (a lot!) but add some advice as well!

Hehe.. I think *most* people that get comments from me would agree that they might be a little *TOO* critique based. LOL
Having said that, I am still guilty of the occasional "great shot!" type of comment.. but I tend to be wordy with those as well.

I think that is pretty good considering I too rarely limit myself to the 'nice shot' type comments.

But, I haven't been commenting near as much as I use to ... I really need to remedy that.

Comment scoring can be deceiving. Take my site for example. It is used mostly in compensation for not voting at our groups clictacamera site(inividuals with developmental dissabilities). I use it to submit a few student photos (our lowest score to date had the most comments).

I don't know the math but it sure looks a bit unbalanced. I think the folks that tend to score in the low average range probably receive the fewest comments overall.

The most comments I've received for one photo was 23 for this one (I'm not counting the comment I made myself). It was one of my highest ranking entries at 5.414. The least amount of comments I've received was 3 for my June Free Study entry (there were a lot of entries) and my Botany entry.

well perharps with all the insurgence of newcomers to the site, the voting and comment rules should be updated.

I understand that every user is required to vote for at least 20% of the submissions. Boost this to 50%.

Same goes for comments, right now, its not required to add a comment, what about if its required to give a comment of over 50 characters, and to 50% of the submissions...

Also what about the registered and paying users? Perharps only paying users should be able to vote for advanced challenges. The paying users can vote for advanced and open challenges. That too would limit the cheap reviews, comments and sensless voting.

Of course, all that would not stop it completly, but it could perharps solve a few problems ...

No one is required to vote. However, to have your vote count in the challenge you must vote on at least 20%. The reason this is there at all is as a fairness measure -- it is to keep people from voting only on those they like or dislike; it insures a more evenly distributed vote. Boosting it will not even out the distribution significantly, but will be likely to reduce the number of votes counted.

Forced comments are not good comments. Do you really want to read a lot of comments like this "......... ......... ......... ......... ........."? A comment is a response to the photos impact on the viewer -- not getting comments is a comment in itself...

Only members can vote on member challenges -- although registered users are always welcome to comment.

I did exactly that for some time I aimed to comment on 20% but somewhere down the track I realised I had a life, now I only comment when I notice something in the photo that I feel I should comment on.

My ratio is not to bad

How can comments be more constructive?
How about the comment area have section titles like maybe with tick boxes 1 poor - 5 great .
(Example only)
Exposure: 1-5
Focus: 1-5
DOF: 1-5
Distractions: 1-5
Comments:

I might take this to another thread but I think if tick boxes were included people would at least take the time to use them, some people simply don't like to write their comments.

i am guilty of this too, i still feel a little funny about telling people what I think they "should do" but when I like a photo, I will be the first to say so.
