I think instead of just picking one overall score there should be several specific things to vote on resulting in an averaged score, such as composition, focus, origionality, if the PICTURE fits the contest (not just the title). Obviously voting would take longer, but it would be more fair than just a random number.

This could be implemented, but like you said it would take a long time, and I'm not sure if everyone would bother. Also, I think many people think about all these criteria iin their head before they just press a "random number"

I've always been in favour of at least separate "technical" and "creative" scores. It actually wouldn't take any longer for most people because voting generally involves working out your stance on those two things before reaching your decision. Also, people often have to comment to explain what their vote means, so having more specific voting scales would actually save them time. I'd like to see separate results pages for the two categories because that would give people a MUCH better idea of the merit of the photos.

If they were going to do that, I'd rather see "technical", "creative", and "challenge". That way the scores could run 0 - 3, and the final score would be the total plus one. I think a 1 - 10 scale is too broad for just one of those categories.

Lisae, I think this is an excellent idea and I like Amphian's classes to score on. This won't take any more time because most of the time you do this mentally anyway and sometimes it makes your vote more "accurate" rather than just saying oh, well, let's give it a 5.

I rarely give less than a 3 and not too many 10s. What bugs me is in my total votes there are bunches of pictures with 5 and 6 and I would somehow like to be able to differentiate a high 5 vs just a 5, etc. This scheme would essentially do it. It also provides excellent feedback to the submitter. And what better way to keep submissions on topic than to make the "meeting challenge" a separate voting category.
