I had tried to update CC, and it refused, as I said.

Exit Code: 146
-------------------------------------- Summary --------------------------------------
- 2 fatal error(s), 0 error(s), 1 warnings(s)

FATAL: Error (Code = 146) executing in command 'MoveFileCommand' for package: 'AdobePhotoshop18-Core_x64', version:18.1.1.252
FATAL: Error occurred in install of package (Name: AdobePhotoshop18-Core_x64 Version: 18.1.1.252). Error code: '146'
WARN: Unable to move file at "C:\adobeTemp\ETR67B7.tmp\1\Application\Required\CEP\CEPHtmlEngine\CEPHtmlEngine.exe" to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Required\CEP\CEPHtmlEngine\CEPHtmlEngine.exe" Error 5 Access is denied.. Try setting correct permissions to the specified file/folder or parent folder, so that admin has rights to modify it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But worse than that, it also wouldn't load up the working version. So I uninstalled it and did a clean install. Still got the above message as it failed :-(

No Photoshop. Eeeek!

How does the On1 compare to PS 6cc?

Yikes!
From the error message it looks like somehow permissions on some folders may have gotten locked down. My course of action would be to uninstall again, and clean all vestiges of the application from the machine, including any remaining folders. Then try a re-install. I recently had a go-around with some Logitech software that was misbehaving and refused to uninstall itself. I used a product called Revo uninstaller to successfully remove it. Revo will remove even the system registry info for the app. I did have to run it twice, the second time with additional settings, in order to have success.

Well, there's nothing to UNinstall since it's no longer listed as "installed", but I will go on a search-and-destroy mission next. Fortunately, if worse comes to worst I have a restore point that is recent (I think) :-)

It's a totally different animal with a completely different vocabulary and interface. Honestly, it's hard to recommend that anyone who's not seriously into this stuff make the switch, though I'd for sure recommend it to someone starting from zero... I just had to process my Buffet entry with ON 1, since CC packed in, and the processing part I pretty much know how to do but the devil's in the details; how to resize, how to save to a certain filesize, etc etc in this case...

If all else fails resizing etc can be done in GIMP. You don't have quite the same control over image quality but I guess it's not too bad for a free program.

I got the PSCC back up by renaming the entire previous directory, doing a clean install, and then dragging over the plug-ins from the old directory...

Aha! Good result. Confirms that a folder permissions issue was at the root of it. Wonder how the permissions got mangled?

You'll love this ... I have a Mac-formatted 3TB disk plugged into my laptop running OS 10.4, which I'm able to mount over Ethernet on my G3 running OS 8.6 (not a typo). Everything works extremely normally, except that the write permission for open folders toggles on and off rather arbitrarily, and it's impossible to copy a file to a closed folder ... :-)

LOL, that is quite the odd behavior! The fact that you can mount it at all is a little surprising, but then Apple was ahead of their time with networking in the late '90s.

With the On1 you have everything, the layers, adjustments, the healing tools, masking everything. It took me a good learning curve to get used to things but there are tutorials and Utube which helped me out tremendously. I can add sky layers flawlessly and the manipulation is so much easier than PS. I found On1 easier to learn than PS
I find it easier to get along with and for me, it just worked much faster and easier.

You can add your own watermarks and resizing as well

For the resizing, you just hit file, export on the right hand top a pop up will happen there you will add your watermarks, and resize and export how you wish. You can even set your own preset of exporting as well which is sweet.
I am using on1 now more than anything at the moment and it just jives so much nicer.

The one thing it does not do is actions like PS does. SO if you are an action kinda person, you won't care for On1 at all.
