I went and played with an E-10 today...I'm in love! I plan on ordering the E-20 tonight...unless someone comes up with a good reason for me not to. Any reason to avoid the E-20? I know it isn't the best camera for doing bursts because of the significant write delay...also know the auto focus in low lighting isn't great. Anything else I should be leary of?

TIA!

Have you checked out dpreview? They have some good reviews on the E-10 & E-20. I experienced a compulsive attack last week and almost went out and got the E-20 - even though I just bought my 4040z 4 months ago. Thanks to my sister, I didn't - I couldn't afford it - at least not yet.

So, let me know how it is.....well, maybe I'll check back in a few months when I can afford it. I know myself - I'll read a great review of it and then NEED to go get it! :-)

Good Luck!!!

If I was in the market to buy a new digicam today, I'd have to wait for the Sigma using the Foveon chip to hit the market before I made a decision. If the Foveon is only half as good as they say it is, it will be running circles around everything else.

But that's just me.

I've had my E-20 for almost a month now. I was unsure, hesitant.. for all the reasons you stated, Lisa, but I am in love with it now! It is everything I wanted and more. Magnetic was a great source re: quirks to work around such as adjusting the white balance appropriately and what not. Maybe email him if he doesn't see this thread.
I can only say "welcome to the e-20 club! glad to see ya!" ;0)
Check out my photo link below. Some of those photos are with the e-20, and some with my old fuji... but they are identified under each photo when you click to enlarge them.
Today I invested in a better camera/equipment bag - backpack style to throw off anyone as my other bag looked too "camera" (I live in the city). Also bought a UV filter and a Polarizer. Haven't uploaded any pics using the polarizer yet, but I will soon.
I think you'll be psyched to have this camera!

Lisa,

I have an e-10 and i love it. imho, the additional features of the e-20, however, are not enough to justify the major difference in cost. furthermore, the write speeds of the e-20 are much slower than those of the e-10 (the increase is nonlinear). imo, the e-10 offers much more bang for the buck.

the major caveat for me of the e-series is flat/skewed color rendition, heavy on the brown/green/yellow/orange parts of the spectrum - esp with any artificial lighting. sometimes subtleties in the coloring seem to be lost, that are adequately rendered on other cameras.

i wrote a detailed email about the e's to karen bryan when she got her e20. i would fwd it to you but i'm out of state for the next 10 days or so. however, if she still has it, maybe she wouldn't mind sending it your way :).

there is a lot about these cameras that is good, however. good luck with your decision!

well what a coincidence: Karen posted at the same time as I did :)...

Thanks for the feedback karen (and all)! Is the write lag really that bad? I don't use bursts very often at all so I didn't think it would bother me too much.

There's only a $300 difference...are you sure it's not worth it? I really want that 5mp to make up for no zoom!!

The thing that keeps me away from the Olympus is the slow 1/640th of a sec. shutter speed

Ronin, there's a faster shutter speed in a different setting. Sorry to be vague... just learning about it myself... but it's there.
Lisa, depends on your needs. I don't shoot sports, and so don't find the lag to be a problem. If I fire a few consecutively, the buffer fills and it needs to write. Once it clears a couple of bars off the buffer, I'm up and running. For my purposes, even when doing a portrait session - the lag came at the time when the model(s) needed to shift, or we needed to talk about a new mood. It is still faster than my old camera (okay, not a good point), I couldn't afford the interchangeable lens d-slr's, and the lens quality of the olympus is excellent.
As in anything, it's a personal preference depending on what you want it for. I want it for mostly portraits, weddings, family photos, etc.

PS, Lisa: I will try to dig up that email from Kollin...

Okay: Here it is: (From Mag'):

"A really really good one to start out with is belgiumdigital.com. Also the Olympus SLR talk forum on dpreview.com is really active and has tons of good info.

some things that I've learned with the E's:

1) manual white balance is your best friend. indoor Ex pics are prone to being plagued imo by an ugly yellowish green cast when using any
non-daylight balanced artificial lighting on most of the preset wb settings. but the manual wb is really good and makes a big difference.

2) the e's lenses are so sharp that it's too easy to blur things out with camera shake. the sharpness possible makes any unsharpness very very noticeable. at first you'll think the E can't take an unblurry picture, unless your technique is already really good. tripods are often mandatory...

3) from 2, it turns out that the E's are really bad with moving things in low light. what i usually do is go up to iso 320 - it can be noisy, esp if you go to iso 320 and then underexpose, but you wont notice the noise nearly as much in prints or at web size.

4) I prefer to not use the on-camera flash. i feel it's harsh and it's color temp is overly blue. but that's just me. i almost never use it unless i have absolutely no choice.

5) get a 62mm threaded b+w +4 closeup lens for 30 bucks. will DRASTICALLY improve your macro capabilities at a fraction of the price of olympus' mcon with imo no discernable quality loss.

that's it off the top of my cabeza. ill let you know if i think of more.
: )"

I have an E-20 and it's great. The price difference is not great between the E10 and E20. The ability to use different lenses as opposed to many other digital cameras is quite nice. The E20 is my 4th digital, and one that may last me more than the year each of the previous did.
