Now that it's become obvious that a significant majority of DPCers (based on the current poll) think that the 2-week window for challenge submissions is a good idea, something else has cropped up that is worth discussing: does it make sense to change the FREQUENCY of the scheduled challenges?

There are now 8 challenges open for submission on the front page; 4 Member's challenges, 2 Open challenges, and 2 Free Studies. This is currently the norm. It means that, at any given time, paid Members have open 8 challenges that they may submit to, and registered members have 2, since they cannot submit to either of the monthly Free Studies. A number of people have commented that this creates too many options and sort of muddies the waters and drains enthusiasm from the collective membership. That's certainly an issue that merits discussion, and we have opened a thread in the Site Council forum that poses the question. But it seems to me that THIS is a good question to pose to the membership at large, so here ya go :-)

Let's use this thread to express our opinions on challenge frequency in DPC. Once enough people have weighed in, there probably will be enough different ideas to warrant a new poll to see where we stand. Meanwhile, to start the ball rolling, here's a possibility that seems sensible to me:

What if we were to schedule a "Sunday Challenge" for paid members every two weeks and do the same with the "Thursday Challenge", holding them on alternating weeks? Meanwhile we could leave the Open Challenges on the weekly schedule. This would reduce the number of challenges open for submission from 8 to 6 at any given time, whilst still leaving the Registered Members with a challenge every week. Remember, the Paid members can enter ALL challenges, the Registered members only the Open Challenges.

What do YOU guys think? Let's have your ideas and feedback.

I like the change you talk about 30861.gif bear_music, think it would make a positive change because right now it does seem like there are to many.

I believe lowering the challenges number from 8 to 6 makes a lot of sense, now that we have a wider submission window.

There sure won't be the risk of running out of choices to shoot, anyway.

I vote pro!

I also like Robert's proposal... eight challenges open for submission is a *lot* especially given the smaller size of the DPC community at this time.

Why would you make a membership offer less than it does now?
10/20/2016 06:54:05 PM · #7
less wear and tear on the members? less competing with the stars?

I like having lots of choices. So for me it's not the number of challenges that has turned me off.
And it's the same number it always was, actually.

It seems like there's way too many, but it is the same number. We wondered if the move from 2 a week to 3 a week was a good move. It definitely had it's pluses and minuses. (ok -- that looks really wrong. It looks like I wrote plooses and minuses. Shouldn't a single s make the u a long u?)

Anyway, while I don't know if it makes a difference for the number of entries. I'm curious whether more people would vote if there were less challenges with which to keep up?

I'm one that's feeling overwhelmed by the number -- but that's my problem. I figure if it really bothers me I can give up trying to enter everything and start picking and choosing. So I'm good either way.

The reason for the extra time was to make it easier for people to participate.

Why would we now cut down the choices to less than what we had before - why make it harder? How does that help?

It's not like anybody is forced to enter all of them........

How can you say that? There are 8 challenges open for entry currently. We used to have 4 open at one time.

The number of challenges presented each week (or year) is the same. Having more of them open at the same time doesn't add to the total number of challenges offered.

Exactly. Thanks.

Why alternate between thursday and sunday? seem overly complicated. Just remove the thursday challenge.

There's some merit to that, but also in the back of our minds is to separate the Sunday and Thursday challenges in a structural way, such as planning "technique"-type challenges in one bloc and more open-ended challenges in the other.

i like having all the choices now. with the longer window, i find myself going back and actually thinking of submitting to challenges i might have otherwise skipped for lack lf time...

i'd vote to keep it as is

I'm in the keep it as it is category. 8 open for entry - as has been said its the same number on an annual basis, just we have a bit longer to think and shoot.

keep the changes how they are. Perfect now. How can someone complain about too many challenges, nobody is obliged to enter them all.

Well, I guess there are two questions presented then in terms of the number of challenges ... so, NOT exactly.

Ok, yes, there may be the same number of challenges to enter in a given year - however, the DPChallenge front page sure looks cluttered and there ARE more (a greater number) of challenges being displayed on the home page now - twice as many as there used to be. It's very cluttered.

I too like all of the choices.

I like it the way it is also. I like having the choices and an excuse to check in several times a day.
