Re: Are you ever amazed at where your "Top picks" ended up in the final challenge results?

I'm always amazed at voters' top picks. There's no figuring them out.. so why try? My last ribbon is a perfect example of "you've got to be kidding me!" LOL

These are my 10s that are not Top 10s. Let's talk a little about why they're art even if they didn't score high in an art challenge.

So much of art is composition. After all, composition could almost be defined as "everything purely visual about an image that shows us it is yours and not just the chaos of perception all around us." The composition of this photo dominates all else. It could almost be a flag, or a font, it's so visual. But it's not cold like a business logo. It screams with flight and motion.

In this image, composition is serving something else. Some might call it "story" which feels right but we have no idea what is happening. We just know something is happening, even if it's just in the minds of two girls. The vastness behind and around them has no effect on them. They are like cowboys in a Western, without the angst.

Art can be more personal than an ordinary image. Disturbingly personal, like someone waving at you in the corner of your eye, someone you weren't expecting to meet, before you even recognize them. Art can capture that kind of vulnerable, anxious, thrilling moment.

Art can be character study. The composition might be simple, obvious, and static, because it knows that it's only job is to show us three girls ready to take over the world.

But back to that chaos of perception I was talking about. Sometimes art reminds us of its own importance by taking us to the edge of the chaos it's saving us from and showing that choas more vividly than unmediated chaos, which we have learned to ignore. Art is not clarity. Art is not focus. Art can thrill and confuse us with enigma. But Art is and always will be the opposite of ignorance.

Surprised to see this thread pop up and even MORE surprised to get a mention.

Thanks Mariuca! Geez, now I'm embarrassed that I haven't revisited this thread myself. I'll be back soon. :-D

Pardon me for throwing in ninth place as well, as it's of a piece. Fifteenth and sixteenth are legit.
And mea culpa, I want to bump these 8's to 10's. I know it's not in the cards, but what a pleasure it would be to rectify one's misteps. Going in the opposite direction might be questionable. Is there a challenge here? "Bumping an Image upon Further Reflection" Might be narrow, but if one provides one's thinking it could be fascinating. Without further ado:

What Do You See When You Close Your Eyes?
First challenge I've commented on all in a while. Not that it's that hard to do nowadays with the smallish number of entries. :-)
This challenge was a strange one for me and I failed to see the approach that many took with their vision / entry. Oh well ... is what it is.

These are the ones that received my top scores that failed to make the Top Ten.

miracle I saw this post ..
thankyou so much Mariuca .. I'm not usually crazy attached to the outcome with my photos in the challenges like I used to be .. but with this flip and bend I went in with very high hopes ..
so I was quite disappointed with the reception .. especially the six 4's ..
anyway thankyou again for liking my predator and posting here ..
you have made my day .. xx ..

These pictures have produced in my core a new feeling. As always, my favorite subject, which has added a new dimension here, is the color blue.
