Thanks for all the solid advice. I would have never thought to turn off the image stabilization. I'll have to give all these suggestions a try soon.

I agree with others comments, with the clarification that if there is a lot of wind and the tri-pod is not able to keep the camera/lens perfectly still, then I use the image stabilization on my Nikon 300-500mm F5.6 lens - with very good results (I actually tested with the VR on and off in windy conditions). If the camera/lens can be perfectly still then I turn off the VR. I also try to keep the shutter speed above 1/1200 sec. If there is not enough light then I crank up the ISO a bit.

(type-o correction: my lens is a Nikon 200-500 F5.6 lens.

Best at 150mm.

All zoon lenses fall off in sharpness at both ends of their zoom range.

Get a better quality lens. This Sigma lens is not good, especially if you want sharp images at telephoto lens focal length. You get what you pay for. You have received many good suggestions in this thread, but none can overcome poor quality glass.

While I do agree you get what you pay for I do not agree on spending money if you don't have it either. I save money and then buy things to keep from using any credit cards or interest bearing methods so I am living within my means. That being said I purchased this lens used with everything I had at the time from JakeKurdsjukwho has taken some amazing images with it. You can look through his profile to see.

I wish I could afford more but there always seems to be a bigger better widget jsut around every corner anyway so it's a game you could never win.

I've taken the advice and went for another shoot. I was an idiot and had my ISO way to high from a previous shoot and didn't realize it.

Please give your honest opinion and thanks. This has a been a learning experience and I appreciate the advice.

Heck, I'd argue that ISO 1600 is just right. Don't fear the noise, it's better than blur.

Also, this is nice and sharp to my eye.

What oils it be at F/9?

I had this lens and had mixed results with it. I used it hand-held most of the time

This shot of the Robin was hand-held at 1/50sec

Some more shots here Sigma 150-500mm
