Well I finally took the plunge, put my head on the block, and entered a challenge. My score thus far is pretty much what I expected for my first time out. I know there's a lot of voting time left, but I figure that what I've got is probably what I'll end up with.

So now I'm curious... What did all of you receive on your first few challenges? Did you think you deserved it?
10/11/2004 06:22:47 PM · #2
4.66 -- I was just happy I didn't score last place! Been fun ever since!

1st entry 4.2

2nd 4.7

3rd 5.4

Then I took a dip due to poor post editing before hitting my highest score. I do feel my pictures are getting better with every challenge, unfortunately the voters dont agree!

I'll find out next week... I just submitted my first photo for the communication challenge, and I'm anxiously waiting...
10/11/2004 07:15:57 PM · #10
My first challenge was 4.992 with this pic:

My average vote recieved is 5.4282 and slowly creeping up although my current score in 'defining features' is only 4.6222, I don't worry too much though - I'd rather enter a pic for review and learn how to improve than waiting and only entering challenges when I have the 'perfect' pic. I've learnt enough to know that the latter approach will only destroy my love for photography, given enough time.

I love seeing the progression of shots that some of you are posting. It's very interesting to see. Jenesis - The shot of the dog is great. The expression is wonderful. He looks so sad that he can't come over.

My first entry yielded this stellar result:

Avg Vote: 4.075
Place: 147/148
Percentile: 1%

Hopefully defining feature turns out better :)

I figure its either the brown or I'm movin' up!

This is a great learning experience.

'Parts' is my first challenge and I didn't really expect to do well in it. (Which is lucky cos so far I'm not, lol) I've very much enjoyed it though, and I'm looking forward to more challenges.

Wacky foods was my first entry. did a last minute set up, scores showed. But it was worth it to just get the ball rolling.
Place: 108 out of 154
Avg (all users): 4.625
Parts is my second entry and is doing much better. And I just submitted an entry for communication. I hope I have the upward curve of some of you others that do so well.
It's good to be part of something that really pushes you to get better. And I don't think that that means your score is better every time, sometimes good/great photos just don't get the scores. I think we have to keep that in mind (that is not my case yet though)

4.29 ... And it's still one of my favorite shots :)

1st 5.10
2nd 4.619....
my average score after 5 challenges was 4.95
Looks like I have been lucky since then and my last 7 entries scored above 6.0 and I am at an average of 5.81 after 13 submissions ;)

Communication is my first ever challenge entry, not being on the last page would be nice.

I found it difficult to try and come up with something that seemed slightly different, not too obvious.

Nervously awaiting results........

My "first" was a double-header: Blue Moon 5.172 and Miniture (I didn't understand the directions -- go figure: a shool teacher who can't read directions) 4.455. My 2nd/3rd was Hope with another below-5, but at least I've been above 5 since then. Hope I can progress as well as Eric did by my 12th entry.

Well, I don't think I have any fingernails left! As Blackdog has pointed out, I'm in the same boat. That's right my 1st challenge, my username is Moose101 for a reason! I'm working to move up from photography 101 (yeah, in about 10 years ;-) but you have to start off somewhere. I'm here to learn and try not to show up on the last page. However, it's all about taking a shot (literally) and coming up with something that's unique and creative that fits the challenge.

So win or lose ... I learn with every shot and hopefully afterwards getting some constructive comments will only improve my future photographs.

Just wanted to say to all, I've seen some unbelievable photographs on this website. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
