One of the first things people did with their cameras was use them to misrepresent reality, or present their own personal flight of fancy as reality. If people believe a photo without question, then it's an artists opportunity to challenge that.

i don't get the adverse reaction to cropping in photo journalism, you do realize that the photographer can zoom in and take the photo or compose their shots for dramatic affect just the same. Is it the issue fact that the photographer has the luxury of time to decide how to maximize the impact of the crop during post?

the merit of a photograph being lost when someone compares it to the original seems stupid.

I guess this is somewhat topical to this discussion :)

STEVE McCURRY? BUSTED? OMG! That's like finding out Cartier Bresson paid a kid to jump over that puddle 100 times 'til he got one he wanted :-(

From what I could tell what they're "busting" him for would be valid under our Standard editing rules ... I don't think any of them were being published under strict photo-journalistic standards accompanying a news story.

Single take with P&S ...

Quite. I was pretty surprised to read that story

I wouldn't even blink if it weren't Steve McCurry. Man's a legend for "photographic integrity", whatever that means these days. Removing the second rickshaw? Removing the objectionably-placed soccer kid? The Steve McCurry we were raised on isn't supposed to DO things like that :-)
