Hi :o) I'm looking to come cruise the parkway and visit a few mountain spots soon for some fall color photos and I have 2 questions. Around what time is the best time to come photograph the colors this year. I either get there too early or too late! Also, Are there any roads closed down or any areas of interest with good views? I'm thinking Chimney Rock, Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain Area. I know I can look up places to visit on google, but I always miss something really good when I go to the mountains and I was wondering if anyone who actually lives there could please recommened any good spots, parks, overlooks, or highways to travel this year for good autumn leaves shots, some places with water/waterfalls would be nice also. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

The areas you mentioned are excellent. I don't think you can go wrong with the Grandfather Mtn area.

Also the Looking Glass area is nice. It is between Waynesville and Brevard.

Before you go -- check to see if the road is open. Francis and Ivan wrecked havoc on the Parkway, and my understanding is that some areas (around Mt. Mitchell) may still be closed.

We went to looking glass and sliding rock in June. Lovely Area!

I'm more or less wanting to know when to go to the blue ridge parkway or grandfather mountain. I always go too early or too late. I would like to go at the height of all the autumn colors.

Thanks for the advice :o)

Oh when. Your call is as good as mine. The leaves are beginning to change now around here, so I would venture a guess that the later part of the week in the northern mountains (Boone, Blowing Rock, etc), and the higher peaks of the parkway. "Down in the valleys," probably in the next week or ten days.

But, I make no promises. I live here and seem to miss it, too.

Don't miss Chimney Rock, that was one of the coolest hikes I did. Hike the whole trail and you will get some amazing pictures. It's really breathtaking.
If you've never seen it, you can see part of the trail in the movie Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis and the fetching Madeleine Stowe. The entire last scene is filmed on the trail so you'll get an idea of some of the views.

Weather report is calling for frost on Thursday. That could potentially cause the leaves to change a bit earlier.

This weekend should offer some nice spots in the higher elevations (if it is not snowing). :-)

My favorite parkway spot is Craggy Gardens, just north of Asheville.

Craggy Gardens are nice -- especially when the mountain laurels are blooming.
