The sad part is that no matter which rule will eventually be accepted, roughly 50% of DPCers will be disappointed :-(

I don't think that's a good way to see it. I, for example, am OK with it whichever way it ends up going. I won't be "disappointed" either way, although I do have a preference. Bear in mind also that whichever way we c end up framing the rule, we'll have the option of using the other approach as a flagged rule when warranted. So, for example, if Minimal stays "no cropping" we might still choose to flag it "cropping allowed" for a minimal wildlife challenge.

Excellent.

Ha ha ha..... right now it is a tie - 95:95 votes.

Hey, let's keep it that way..... alternate weeks cropping/no cropping rule.

That could work and would keep half the people happy.

Half the people could be happy one week and the other half the next...except.. I hope we don't have a minimal challenge every week!

I shouldn't have said "every week"..... should have said "every time we do have a minimal challenge, alternate between the two rules". But that was too much typing ;-)

One-a-week is perfect for a lazy-sloppy photog epert-in-camera-composing artist like me.

The sensible folks have started to vote.

It's interesting to note we have roughly 3X-4X the number of votes on the poll as we do number of folks who actually ENTER minimal challenges... Or any weekly challenge, for that matter :-(

give Niall the data and have him cross link and get a subset of the people who have entered at least 2 challenges in the past year and see what the results are.

Your way or the highway, huh?

I'm still hoping for a compromise that would make MOST people happy instead of insisting that MY opinion is the only one that counts.

[Posting as me, not SC]

I started off advocated for cropping but I have changed my mind and swapped my vote. Why? Because I was persuaded (through this thread) that no cropping was important to those people that really valued and enjoyed Minimal. Changing Minimal for the people who will complain about it whether there is cropping or not doesn't seem right to me....

Shall I interpret that as meaning that those opposed to cropping are to be considered as not being so sensible?

I consider myself to be a very sensible person and voted against this suggestion. I would take the time to explain why, but some might view my explanation as lacking sense so I won't bother.

I'm all for cropping in Minimal -- as long as we change the name.

Ray, you're not making any sense at all ;-)

If your reasoning is because "we already have cropping allowed everywhere else, and this is supposed to be the (SOOC) way of taking a picture" then you don't need to worry about others not finding it sensible.
There are very few minimal challenges in comparison to everything else, because many dislike it since it is so restrictive, but that is honestly why I like it the most.
I learned more about myself as a photographer, and how to take a better picture when I forced myself to go out for Minimal entries than I ever did in advanced rulesets because in advanced I always had the option to crop it in. "Shoot wide, crop later" is something I would tell myself while shooting. It is so much harder to get it perfectly composed straight out of the camera, and having to sit there for a while adjusting settings, retaking the shot....it was so rewarding when what I saw in my head translated into what came out.
they may not have been ribbon winners or even good pictures, but the ability to transfer from thought to form is rewarding in its own right, and has helped build a more solid foundation for everything else I do with a camera now.

I'm with Brian. If you allow cropping it's not minimal edit anymore.

Ha! Just saw this.....I changed my vote 3 days ago after thinking hard about this. I felt too, that just because I use a certain type of camera shouldn't play any role to change the rule. No cropping is my vote, lets keep things minimal. Take the time to get the comp right in the field.

I voted "No". Even though it is an inconvenience for some types of images, I truly do appreciate what I have learned from the exercise of getting it right in the camera. It has made me think about composition for images in ALL challenges and I feel has made me a better photographer. My two cents worth :)
