Please feel free to add:

1. I noticed most, if not all the winning photos have been close up shots of the subject.

I can understand this since a close up tends to have much more impact, but I'd like to give my appreciation to anyone who wins with a medium or long shot :-)

2. In sharp focus
3. Well lit
4. Creative but still obvious - a delicate balance
5. Emotionally compelling

The main reason this may be is that many digitals are limited in usable zoom and, because this is a challenge competition with most people needing a clear definition of the challenge..winners tend to be able to isolate the challenge idea better with closeups.

My "something old" shot should fare quite nicely then :)
