Artist's Statement
Please provide a brief statement (3000 character limit).

They think I'm an artist and further think that I have something to say. And only 3000 characters. Maybe I can use a lot of commas.

You can always pump up your prose by using three periods instead of the ASCII elipsis character ... :-)

LOL!

I do a fair amount of reading and it seems that most artists have a lot to say... even if it sometimes comes out sounding more like chatter than music. Commas are good.

Last show I put photos in wanted an artist statement and I didn't do it. Nobody said anything.

I generally put in something silly/stupid/smart ass. but nobody seems to notice.

Might you consider phrasing your submission as a series of questions?

There ya go!

"Why do I do what I do? Do I even care? Do you? Is it even relevant to your appreciation of (or disapproval of) my work? Should I make up a childhood trauma to seem more "real"? Perhaps I should get all technical and talk about f/stops and 2nd-curtain flash and dragging the shutter?" Etc Etc :-)

Here's what I have so far:

Hello. I like to shoot people.

Only 2970 characters to go.

01/09/2016 11:53:56 PM · #10
that is true. I think it will complement your work.

shooting is one thing you do. how do the other things you do (or experience) affect how you shoot...?
i.e. do any of those other things either inform your shooting or inspire a rebelliousness?
provide examples. stories if possible. do not avoid embellishments. drop a crumb or two.

Thanks, c. Those are good thinking exercises. I'm thinking maybe a short anecdote from my experiences shooting on the street. And building from there. Or not.

Certainly your completely normal perspective on life is reflected thru your images, right?

Stories! Yeah, that!

Is there the remotest chance that you would know how to embellish something???

I have this thing where with the 300 words required. I start off not being able to find enough words, but as I start writing it gets to the point of ballooning to 800.

Just start writing whatever comes to mind, don't stop for grammar or anything that makes you think it's stupid to write this. Just go and don't stop. Get enough material and then start to edit it.

Some questions.
Why do you shoot(though try not to use this word in the statement)? Try to limit the I's (I this, I that, etc).

Any aha moments you want to share?

What keeps you working on your art/passion?

If all else fails?

Good luck!

Explain your approach to people and how you pick who to shoot and why. This may be much more difficult than it sounds but I have a feeling there's a story in there.

As far as statements go, Less is More!. Let your photography do your talking.

Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things.

Hello. I like to shoot people. Also animals. In Spanish. I can't speak Spanish, though, so most of what happens when I'm shooting is incomprehensible to me.

Dont forget the anger and attack anything superfluously popular.

I think you need to talk about your childhood. It all starts there.

My lack of verbal skills in the Spanish language began in early childhood, at the same time my grandmother gave me a little camera for my birthday. She died shortly afterward & in my young mind death, Spanish, & photography became forever linked.

hehehe one margarita is good, Two margaritas, shared with a friend, is better. I'm glad you don't mind the liberties I'm taking with your past.

In my high school years, my parents let me set up a small darkroom in the laundry room. A large cabinet had to be cleaned out first, & in the back of this cabinet was an old, unopened bottle of tequila wrapped on Christmas paper. This was a mystery, as neither of my parents drank.
