No... no! Say it isn't so, Lynn!

*sigh*

They're all against me.

Do you have a link for the explanations of Dr Seuss's works?

(I know the others)

a start I'm not always a fan of wikipedia. The Butter Battle Book was the one I thought of, particularly.

Careful going down the allegory rabbit hole. Technically with enough literary criticism every book, movie and story is an allegory. Most of Dr. Seuss is not intentional allegory, unless you consider every children's book that teaches a lesson is allegory.

Oh. I was starting to think stories that taught moral/ethical lessons were allegories. For those of us that might be intellectually challenged (me), why wouldn't all children's book that taught a lesson be an allegories? Sorry if it's a dumb question. I am trying here.

It's not dumb at all. It's highly debatable.

The story of the fox and the grapes "feels" like an allegory because the fox "stands for" anyone who can't get his way and the grapes "stand for" whatever he couldn't get.

But what if I wrote a children's book about a young boy named Billy who learns that he will get a peanut butter candy if he asks nice? Is that really an allegory? It's something that could happen to anyone on any day. It's utterly mundane.

But if you think about it, all I have to do is change Billy to a fox and suddenly it's an allegory. Huh?? The line is actually rather fuzzy.

So for the sake of this challenge, I would say don't get too literal. Make sure something is standing in for something else. If you take a photo of Billy stealing candy from Sally when he already has one, it won't "feel" like an allegory for greed. But if you put Billy in a ridiculous pile of gold it will "feel" more like an allegory.

And if you put a squirrel in a ridiculous pile of acorns, it will feel EVEN MORE like an allegory.
