The last one was 2009. It was Advanced rules.

That sounds fun... as long as it's not Expert.

Why?
No one is more capable of taking pictures without editing?
The theme is too difficult for a minimal?
let me know, why

I still must begin with the perfect shot, like anyone. Editing is my favorite part of the process of photography. I prefer to edit free of any constraints or restraints. I shoot pictures so that I can have fun on the computer, post-processing.

I am aware that others do not enjoy PP. For these others, it begins & ends with taking the shot. Expert rules doesn't have to change a thing for these photogs. As the saying goes..."just because you can, doesn't mean you must."

The challenge is your suggestion, so I believe you get to choose the editing rules that apply as well.

Ah if only that was true.

Because if its expert folks can do it minimal, but if its minimal folks cannot do it expert.

Therefore expert suits all.

I think minimal is very possible. We should do both. (separate challenges).

Everyone starts out with minimal. Why not stop there?

Apply that logic to anything else and see how it works.

well of course we don't stop... whence our ills. Pandora's box. It is our unhumble pie.

I had my own first copy of Photoshop (v3) before I had my first digital camera. When I finally found a digital camera I could afford (Minolta , 2MP I think), I jumped right in with image manipulation. I felt like I'd been waiting my whole life for this. Of course, I had. My very first pictures were taken with a film camera, of course, & I'd take the roll of film in to the drugstore to be developed & printed. I have no desire whatsoever to return to those days of no PP possible. Yuck.

The thing I am struggling to understand is this: I accept that there are people who have no desire to PP their images. I have no interest in trying to change their minds, or make any kind of a value judgement upon them. But why do I feel like they're making a value judgement upon me? Because they clearly want to ban what I love to do (& by extension, me) from this site. Why? I truly don't get it.

Exactly, and with expert everyone can do as they wish.

we did not understand each other; I don't want to prohibit the editing, that is a process that i use often, for ever...
I only proposed the minimal in a challenge.... I have no problem to accept the expert editing in another one (in self portrait for example)
From what have you written nightmare seems to be a title born only for expert editing while I think that it could be possible to do an amazing shots aldo with the minimal rules.... but this is not important...I think I'll be in any case

It's just that no matter what challenge topic is suggested, it seems like someone always suggests it would be better with Minimal or Basic rules. The justification is always the same: if you're not a good enough photographer to accomplish it without resorting to fancy editing tricks, then these fancy editing tricks aren't going to help your photograph look better, so why not just do it in Basic in the first place. I'm paraphrasing, of course.

I'm sick of this anti expert song too. If minimal suits some people better, then they are welcome to just do it that way themselves.

I agree and disagree with the anti expert editing chants. I understand why people want it, but I also understand the other side. Often it becomes more of a photo manipulation challenge than a photography challenge (which, correct me if I am wrong, is what this site is all about?). I agree, the photos winning expert challenges are amazing, but there are so many better photos forgotten in these challenges just because they didn't import 35 different photos into photoshop to create a digital masterpiece.

I would love more challenges to be advanced editing rules, just to let people edit to some extent, but still let us see what they are capable to catch in the camera and not create in PP. Bring the smoke out there, create a creepy atmosphere and put your model in a chair and slap that makeup on! Don't take a photo and put his/her makeup on afterwards. Don't create smoke in Photoshop. Catch it in your camera and show us what you can do!
