This is hard to explain to normal people. I think this group will appreciate it more!

This is a 9 image HDR panorama - 3 images for the pano, 3 exposures for each image.

Normally a tripod or a very steady hand would be required to get good registration for the HDR and alignment for the pano.

This was shot with a DJI Phantom 3 quad copter hovering at 120 ft above the ground! (think about that for a minute!) Using the RC to pivot for the pano and the iPad app to shoot the photos, then processing it in PhotoMatix and Photoshop.

That is impressive. Not a lot of wind then!

Rockin'!
At some point I do want to take up drone piloting, and I will need to decide whether I want to invest in something that can support an SLR platform or live with the smaller sensors. I suppose I should just jump in with something low cost, get my feet wet and then make a decision.

It was a little windy at the time. Not sure what the wind situation was at 120 ft.

the stabilizers on this unit are pretty amazing.

I haven't seen one that can take a dSLR rig up. This one is the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced. The camera is essentially a 12 MP point and shoot that also shoots 2.7K video. The is a "Pro" version and the only difference is 4K video. The camera is fixed focused at infinity and fixed aperture of F2.8.

the video quality is quite impressive.

Watch the video at high res on a large screen if you can. This is rendered at 1080p.

The DJI Inspire series has a rig that includes an option for a m4/3 camera that takes Olympus and Panasonic lenses. The Oly 12mm (24mm equiv) F2.0 is ideal for this.

This is quite expensive though, over $4,000 when you include the lens. DJI The Phantom Advanced is $1,000.

there are a couple of very active Phantom 3 groups on FaceBook if you want to learn more. Be warned, some of the members are kind of trolly. ;-)

There is also a lot of activity in the FAA for UAVs. They're trying to come up with an official rule set for UAVs before the holiday buying rush. Currently there are only guidelines from the FAA. Some estimates are saying that over a million UAVs will be sold this holiday season. But that includes the tiny camera-less quads up to the bigger rigs.

great pano. I use a GP4 on a scratch build and am just starting to play with the idea of trying panos with it. I was not aware the camera in the Phantom could bracket for HDR, or are you using another method?

Thanks!
It can bracket 3 or 5 shots at .7 stops variance. I use the 3 shot bracketing.

You can also set the shutter speed manually if you want. The aperture is a fixed 2.8.

Next I'm going to try some longer night exposures and see how steady it is.

Finished editing the video last night. The video quality on this gear is really impressive.

Watch on a big screen at high res if possible.

Enjoy!

Gotta have a look when I get home today! It's useless to try to view it @ work with our abysmal connection quality.

Nice video. The law in the UK re drones (No higher than 400 ft, minimum of 150 metres away from built up area, 50 metres from any person or vehicle/vessel - unless you are licensed)mean that it is very restrictive to fly. The law has a curious mix of imperial and metric measurements as well.

Very cool. I liked the video as well.

I would love to get a drone someday.

There was a friend of a friend around here who had one of those DJI drones and it decided to stop working while he was flying it over a lake, fell right in and was destroyed. I would hate to have that happen to mine, but of course if you don't take chances with it you might not get the really cool footage (like the video you've uploaded)

Geeze, photography is getting complicated since it grew wings (or rotors?) and left the nest :-)
