I would like to see the ribbons given out extended to the top 5 place getters, here are my reasons.

1) A little while ago I looked at the average number of entries per challenge, Now Vs 1 year ago and discovered that there was an average increase of 49 entries per challenge.

2) Masters contenders would increase but could be put back to 3 ribbon winners to prove consistency.

3) There is room on the front page for 5 ribbon winners to be displayed. Currently lots of negative space ;-P

4) Why not?

Looking at the thread with the green and purple place getters Link here has displayed to me that they are of a quality deserving of a coloured digital ribbon but more importantly recognition of excellence.

How do others feel?

I think it would be a wonderful idea. Everyone here pretty much gives virtual ribbons for 4th and 5th place *anyway*.

The only arguement I can see people making is that if you're going to give 5.. why not 10? Why not 20? hehe.

It's a silly arguement of course, but it'd happen.

The give 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th at the fairs.

I think it's a great idea, but how will they afford all those ribbons? ;)

By putting up your subscription of course!!

Or maybe they will collect some other way, like blood!

Or by praying to the god of money and getting a donation from the Church of Planet X...oh, no....I've given away another state secret!

It seems like one of those no brainers to me. There are lots more entries and only a small increase in percentage of winners/ribbons by going to 5. Who wouldn't be happy with a Green or Purple?

I'm only really partial to blue. ;)

Maybe something like a white ribbon for 4th through 10th place as an honorable mention?

There's another thread with the mention of colours for 4th and 5th. 4th = Green and 5th = purple.

I welcome any color to show up in the left frame of my profile page. Green, purple or white

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Most of the fairs I've been to would also call the current "ribbon" a rosette. Maybe these honorable mentions could be true ribbons where they are just triangular shaped at the top.

If the first five place getters have to validate there photographs then why not give out ribbons?

Very good point!

My 3rd reason about using available space on the front page is a real reason as well.

Added benifits

The home page is the DPC's first view for potential new members and photo buyers, there is room to add 2 more ribbon winners and make use of that available space to grab their attention.

Increased sales opportunities. We all have the ability to have our photos cleared for sale so that it appears on the home page with a "Print Available" tag if we are lucky enough to have gained a ribbon, why not maximise this potential.

Great idea. Should be put to the vote.
Not had a vote for ages now.

Were ideas put to vote before? (I joined recently)

Another thing would be increasing mandatory validation to top 10 instead of top 5.

In the early days when this site was shapeing up there were votes and polls every week.
I vote for a vote.

I vote for at least five place. My personal reason is I can't argue normally that my picture was better then any of the top three, if there was five I would have two more to think (complain and moan) about. :-)

The other reason is the top five tend to all be good shots, and it would not use up that much extra bandwidth to show 10 shots, comparied to 6.

The first five place-getters have to validate so that if there is a disqualification among the top 3, we do not need to go out again for validation for the new 3rd-place winner. If we increase ribbons to the top 5, we would most likely request proof from the top 7 or 8.

why stop at five; lets make it like the special olympics, no slight or bigotry intended just a reference, everyone gets a ribbon. it would foster mosr positive feelings about entering and not offend the tearfully sensitive with "competition."

keep it at three. it works fine.it ain't broke don't f it.

If there were to be five, then I think one of the suggestions above of the ribbon being a slightly different shape, rather than just a different colour, is a good one.

Then the top three, the original ribbons, still stand a little higher than the rest.

Bit like the Olympics, the top three really are the places that matter ...

I think a 4th and 5th might be nice as well (plus I'd have had one by now if this had been running long enough *laugh*) as a sort of runners up thing.

I do think the top three should be kept different though, and that way an increase in ribbon numbers can't be viewed as decreasing the perceived value of getting a ribbon.
