I have used different versions of Adobe Photoshop, but I still find that 5.5 was the most user-friendly.

Can someone tell whether it is still available somewhere, from where I can downlod?

As far as I know Adobe doesn't sell it. You may be able to find it for sale on places like eBay. Realize that it will not support RAW files produced by any of the cameras introduced in the last 2-3 years unless you convert them to DNG's, use Lightroom 6 as a front end, or some other program to create TIFFs from them up front.

Are you looking for the Windows or Mac version? FWIW you may need to find version 5 and an updater -- I can't remember if v5.5 was released on its own or only as an updater ... I still use 5.0 most of the time myself ...

Getting the software is easy, just download them here...

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-5-product-downloads.html

Purchasing or otherwise obtaining the license key that makes it work may be more problematic.

The real question is, is the OP talking about CS 5.5, or 5.5? Huge difference.

I'm thinking they're speaking specifically about the Photoshop 5.5 software, which is a part of CS5.5 but could be purchased separately. CS5.5 came in various forms and bundles. Regardless, the software for PS 5.5 is found at the same link.

Right, but Photoshop 5.5 (released in 1999) is different than Photoshop CS 5.5 (2011).

This page has a nice chart showing all the versions with their release dates an OS compatibility. The first version I used was v0.87 -- before Adobe bought and named it ...

And this page has windows downloads for all Photoshop versions going back to 2000, including Ps 5.5

Why, would you want to purchase such outdated software...your $$$ would be used better to get the PsCC....what am I missing here. (I know it must be obvious what that is...lol). It's soooo way to use and you are NEVER out of date. Best $$$ I ever spent!!!

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who cannot afford (or choose not) to update their hardware and software all the time. I believe in using things until they don't work anymore. Right now I'm using a Mac G3 running OS 8.6 to remotely control a Mac G5 running OSX 10.5 and Firefox 3.6 ... I can edit using a Wacom tablet I got in 1995.

Unless you do a lot of cloning and need the Content-Aware healing brush and such, Photoshop 5.0 (which I use most of the time) has plenty of tools and power to edit photos for DPC. If you shoot RAW you'll need something to convert those to TIFF or .PSD format, but otherwise most of the other "advancements" in later versions (including all CS/CC versions) are mostly sizzle and not steak IMO ... the one exception might be the ability to save lossless JPEGs.

And will keep spending. And that's the rub. With a perpetual license, sure, you aren't continually updated, but you have access to that software as long as you have a system that will run it. With the subscription, as soon as you stop paying, you stop playing.
I'm not saying that the subscription is a bad deal, by the way. Just that you are "on the treadmill" so to speak, and cannot ever get off, unless you want to find another editing solution, or quit photo editing altogether.

In the "old days" in order to use a computer you had to gain access to a terminal connected to a big computing system controlled by some big corporation or university or the government.

Then came the "PC revolution" which gave each person control over their data and how to use and store it.

Isn't anyone else concerned about the counter-revolution occurring now, where both our data (and the software to use it) are being sucked back up into enormous centralized systems completely beyond our control?

Sure, the device in your hand may be 100k times "smarter" than what we used to send men to the Moon, but if your access to the internet and phone systems is cut off it's going to to be relatively useless.

Personally, I'm continuing to use "standalone" facilities as much as possible ...

At risk of being crass, Oh Hell Yes.

The cloud is a blessing and a curse. Well managed, e.g. used as a backup it can be a big plus; it's not otherwise that easy to maintain highly current off-site backups. On the other hand, I would never subscribe (literally) to Microsoft's idea of cloud storage for Windows 10, where my files are by default *only* in the cloud, and exist on my local device only when I specify it (not by default).
I may be old school, but my data is *my* data, and my applications are *my* applications and I don't want any corporation to be able to pull the rug out from under me. Now, that said, the horse is already out of the barn with respect to applications. Most software depends on a license server, and if that server is decommissioned, your "perpetual license" will, either now or at some point in the future (i.e. when you need to reinstall it) be worth nothing. I recently got bitten on this to the tune of $950, so it is a real sore point.

WOW! so many posts, I never expected!!
Well, I am asking for Photoshop 5.5 only. It was least cumbersome to use. I still miss it.
