I don't wish to moan but my entry for Wacky Foods met the challenge, it was not a 'WOW' picture in my own opinion, but it was OK. I didn't recieve any particularly negative comments but scored 14 2's!!

I would be delighted if any one of these 14 people will explain why they voted this low. I am keen to improve my photography and this is difficult without feedback.

I didn't get to vote on yours, but i would of gave u a 9
saying so if the whole knife was in focus it would of been a 10 no problems

hope that helps

Perhaps it was my choice of filling. I understand that Jelly in the USA means Jam or Preserve (i.e. Strawberry Preserve) and a Jelly Baguette is therefore not particularly wacky!

Jelly Babies are Jello like sweets, similar to gummy bears.. but different.

Then again, perhaps my choice of a shallow Depth of field was too much for some voters, although this approach to photograhing food is far from unusual.

Well I gave 6 for it and generally its not bad shot at all... specially between many much worser... but as I didnt left any coments i think it didnt gave me any specific feeling good or bad. And I must say it was hard competition and it was real hard to keep any criterias while voting.
Same i can say that Im surprised of top pictures aswell...cuz they are not close to my top.
You did a good job!

Kia Ora, Hi I rated this a 5 I thought however the knife was too prominant and would like to see it sited more to the rear and a litttle unsharp. just my opinion tho.

I gave it a 5..
Met the challenge but nothing outstanding good or bad about it.
I would have liked to see the dof increased abit and that is probably what got you the 14 x 2s...

I didn't get a chance to vote during the challenge, sorry. I think the shot is very good technically. The DOF is ok, defining the look you were after as you said. The composition is good, the knife is carefully placed. If anything it looks a bit too "staged" if you see what I mean? There's no crumbs at all, the knife clean and polished. I agree with crabappl3, one or two jelly babies on the plate may have helped the idea along a bit?

Also, I'm no expert on lighting, not by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems a bit dull or flat, whatever the expression should be. I do know that the right light can make a or break a shot, I'm not saying it broken this one but it seems to lack some lustre, if that makes any sense and was of any help then you're welcome, if not then forget it, if you like it the way it is then that's what counts.

Also posted on the picture page before i realised what I was doing, too early in the morning.....

'Urro..

I scored it a 6...

Technically a good image, although possibly a little flat (as mine was with hindsite, IMHO) in the lighting department.. Another light source/reflector (You didn't mention your light source(s) ) high and behind on the left to avoid reflections, but giving some rim lighting to the objects.

What held it back IMHO for me is that I can see most 5 year olds really eating these, for that matter, I would as well.. I don't feel that it fitted the 'wacky' part of the challenge.

I like the DOF choice, maybe one stop wider so the whole of the front bit is in focus, but having the rear one OOF works for me.

Just my 2c worth..

I usually vote:
<=4: Bad photo/not meeting challenge (depends on how bad)
5: Meets challenge but little creativity
6: Meets challenge and shows some creativity
>=7: Wow shots (depends on how good).

Some people vote with a much higher variation:
like it: 8+
dislike it: 1-3

In the past, I've been surprised too when I got 20+ people voting 1-3 on my everyday challenge entry which wasnt bad and was meeting the challenge. But then that photo didnt deserve 8-10s either. So I guess it evens out. 5.4 is not a bad score.

I voted (Only in this challenge)
1-3 if it turned my stomach
4-7 if it looks good but not mouth watering
8-10 if mouth watering

Thanks for the constructive comments. The shot was taken in daylight from a large window to the right of the plate. The plate was on a table and this might have contributed to the lack of light from above. I used a piece of white card as a reflector, but ended up positioning it more to remove the background than to fill shadows.

As for whether this is wacky food or not... well it could be wackier I guess. I had an idea to use cocktail sticks in each baguette with the head of a Jelly baby impaled on each. With different lighting this could have then been a more interesting 'Halloween' style picture.

i think some people here just want to vote in a sense they vote and not really checking the quality of the shots. Even I experienced that... a lot of 5 6 7 rating yet sombody will vote for 1...ahehehehe funny. They just want to vote just to get the percentage of 20% in voting all images.
