I was very unhappy with my placing in the complex challenge (did it really deserve 5 1's, 15 2's, and 27 3's?), so instead of complaining about it (too much) I decided to post some pictures that I thought would have finished better in their challenges. Oh, and I also want to thank graphicfunk and jbsmithana for their encouraging comments and for giving me the idea for this thread.

Vanishing Point ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/244/thumb/96682.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/244/thumb/96682.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Touch ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/259/thumb/106963.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/259/thumb/106963.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

All of these finished with averages under 5.5 and I thought they all deserved better. Please let me know what you think and post a some that you thought would finish higher than they did.

Vanishing Point ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/244/thumb/96682.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/244/thumb/96682.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Firstl;y you probably missed 'points' for being off topic. Whilst I see your lines the message needs to be a lot clearer to the average DPC 1 second viewer.

Even if you feel that is wrong - I personally find nothing much really aesthetically exciting about the shot. Your horizon is wonky - without being so wonky it looks like design, and overall I feel it could do with a little push on the contrast.

Framing ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/251/thumb/101352.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/251/thumb/101352.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I like this one - meets the challenge spot on to me and shows better creativity than a lot of others in that challenge. However again t seems to lack contrast or be slightly too bright, and the man is out of focus. I see you used F22 which is good, but perhaps if you could have stood away a little and used a longer lens he would have been sharper.

Color wise though there isn't much going on so i would have tried this in B&W.

Back lighting ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/253/thumb/102804.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/253/thumb/102804.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This is OK, but it's out of focus - for me if it's out of focus (without being intended) then it should be submitted. I know birds are hard to keep still, but it's worth it in the end when you have a crisp photo with details.

Touch ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/259/thumb/106963.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/259/thumb/106963.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Well i am surprised this didn't get higher, but I also think it's a potentially high scoring scene wasted. Perhaps a little too much exposure on the water which has lost most of it's motion. A little bit less and it would have appeared a little more silk like which in turn may have gotten rid of the 'touch what touch' comments.

As it is, it's a struggle to be a clear tie with the theme (otherwise one could submit anything)

Complexity ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/260/thumb/108083.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/260/thumb/108083.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This I feel is pretty nice - a little too busy, but in an abstract sense you have created a nice composition using very nice colors. Not much to say about this - apart from it's not the kind of image that will ever score that well here.
All of these finished with averages under 5.5 and I thought they all deserved better. Please let me know what you think and post a some that you thought would finish higher than they did.
DPC really isn't a measure of ones photographic ability, more our ability to take a photo that represents the majority feeling for a subject -so peopel are never marking completley on your photograph.

The monthly free-study challenges are the only ones that are unbiased so I would aim to get proper feedback from those rather than the 'meet this subject' challenges.

As far as touch goes, I didn't feel that picture made me "feel" anything in any way. If you wanted to use water, and you had taken a picture of a bathtub full of it, that I could have related to. I have never felt a woodland stream like that before. Just my 2 cents...

Hopper, very nice selection. I wasn't here for the parallel lines, but I would have to give "Face it" a 10. The Dark Punk Colony looks like it was an album cover! I was only a registered user at that time so I couldn't vote on those either, but I would have scored it high.

Wasn't my picture, but it made me feel as though I was there. Like I could almost feel the mist from the falls. Just my 2 cents....

I'm still glad you commented. Any pictures you thought would do better that you would like to share?
10/05/2004 11:48:34 AM · #11
All of mine for a start ;D hoho

I often look at the highest rated on DPC and wonder why some of them are higher than others such as these. They are all high scoring but if you look at some of the photographs above them it does provoke certain questions.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/125/thumb/32757.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/125/thumb/32757.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/169/thumb/53734.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/169/thumb/53734.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/163/thumb/52353.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/163/thumb/52353.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Looking at these makes for a very good argument to the fact that a big percentage of peoples votes are added to meeting the challenge, and thus never 100%% on your photography. - I personally think there are some stinkers up there.

For example::

I feel this is one of the best photos on DPC >> ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/220/thumb/86457.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/220/thumb/86457.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Yet it ranks lower than these>>
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/39/thumb/7519.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/39/thumb/7519.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/62/thumb/12004.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/62/thumb/12004.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/183/thumb/58358.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/183/thumb/58358.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/56/thumb/10886.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/56/thumb/10886.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I don't mean anything nasty by that - just I would expect it to do better in a Free Study than the others.

thanks hopper for including my DPC album cover entry. I too thought it would do much better than it did. At the end of the day, I loved it & that's all that matters to me!
thanks again!

About my photo:
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/260/thumb/108083.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/260/thumb/108083.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

What I was trying to capture is the yello leafs framing the red and the green. And the red leafs leading the eye into the photo and disapearing.
The resized photo dose not look as good as the full screen one.
The real thing looks much better then the photo.

I think it could be a little better in focus, and maybe could be softened a little. perhaps with neat image as it gives a cool effect.
10/05/2004 12:41:23 PM · #15
Donna,

I understand your frustration with low scores. As long as you can mold that frustration into better pictures then you can turn a negative into a positive.

DPC is a general audience with a strong affinity toward the challenge topic which can skew voting. One unvarying quality, however, is image technical quality. That is the one area where you have total control. Exercise it.

The images you identified, with the possible exception of the first one, received low scores most likely because of their low technical quality rather than their content.

(BTW, I added my review to your Complexity entry)

its all in different context though. it doesnt mean that the other photos are necessarily better cuz they scored higher, it just means that in the context they were in, they were great. a lot of point are accorded to how it meets the challenge. the one you picked as your fav was a free study, but it would not score high in the other challenges.

Also, three of the four in the "ranks lower than these" had pretty low participation, so I'm guessing they were done early in the site's history. As more and more people participate, and as expectations get raised because of the awesome stuff we see here, I think the average score will go down.

I just read the last comments stating that "It got hurt by the 1s and 2s". That makes you think that there may be a "sabatoge" vote there. I agree that certain images may not be as "moving" as others but to kill the shot by giving it a 1 or a 2 is somewhat reckless. Suppose that at the end of the challenge I was to "sabatoge" competing images by giving an extreme vote, would that not be manipulative and deceitful? Hows this, 1,2,9,10 demand a comment or will not be counted. As well, vote for all of the images or vote for none. Either way requires a commitment. After all, I suspect that alot of us participate so we can learn from the sincere input of others. There is no sincerity in half-hearted efforts and reckless voting.

Oh my...............this is borderline right wing!!

That is my point - the point being that the photographs on DPC are not judged on pure photographic quality / ability / beauty etc so one cannot measure from that how well one is doing photographically. It has a lot to do with meeting challenges.

Just trying to explain why some photographs rank low when they are apparently good, and others high when they are apparently not so good.

Totally agree, I just did the math. If you subtract the 1& 2 votes the photograph would of scored a 6.91. See what just 3 votes can do!!!

BTW I gave this photo a very high vote

Three votes? Try ONE! In the Feet challenge, one voter without a camera gave an 8 to the Blue winner, but didn't vote at all on the Red- that was the difference. I'm not saying my image was better than Eddy's, just that the circumstances are funny. ;-)

Ditto. One of my three favorites for that challenge.
