How large is the download for upgrading to Windows 10? I ask because we're on DSL and downloading large amounts of data takes forever and sometimes just plain fails.

I read last night on ZDnet that it's 3.2Gb.
I'm going from W7p on the wife's new laptop to W10 within the next week or so.
Been using W8/8.1 on the work desktop for a couple of years and with an aftermarket Start menu and in the desktop mode by default, it's very much improved over my home XP machine. I really look forward to building a new machine.

Windows 10 does not use IE, though you can install IE.

If you don't install IE, Java applets won't work, just like they won't work in Chrome.

But for you DPC addicts, DPC doesn't use Java applets or any other sort of plugin, so not to worry.

Me too. Waiting for Skylake CPUs and motherboards to support them. I'm guessing I'll be waiting until Nov/Dec before making the move.

For large file down-/uploads I've been going to the (nearby) library with a 64GB flash drive and using their faster machines/connections. Don't know if you can do that for this upgrade though ...

My (ancient) Windows machine crashed a while ago, and I just managed to get AutoStitch and IrfanView installed on my flash drive, and used them to make some panoramas I took last week -- ran in about five minutes what would have taken my old machine a day or two if it could even finish it at all ...

I'm running fine now. Had to recalibrate my monitors, cygwin had some problems with some old dll's (works fine now after I removed them) and I had to upgrade to Canon EOS utility, version 2.

I'm leaving my existing PC with Win7 for the time being. Upgrades like this can cause unexpected problems. I am going to be building a new system soon, and will put Win10 on that. Once the new system is up and running well, I can upgrade the old machine if I want to.

So I've signed up and I'm in line. I'm praying my computer qualifies, but I'm warning you, Microsoft, this had better work. Because if it doesn't, I'm gonna... I'm gonna... do nothing because all of my data will be inside your cloud and you'll have me by the (BLEEP).

just finished installing it. so far, no blow-ups

Installed 10 on two computers the day it came out. One is a new custom tower, the other is a 7 year old Dell laptop. Install was fast and straightforward on both, absolutely zero issues with anything, all software still works great - and I like the GUI changes very much over 8.1. It operates very fast & smooth, the new Edge browser (replaces IE) will take some getting used to, but it's pretty sharp, the major difference is it does not allow extensions - at least right now. I am a Windows & Mac user, I see benefit in both systems, so I approach reviewing either very objectively.

Also, the whole being mad about a waiting list thing is a moot point - My laptop was never on a waiting list, you can just download and install Windows 10 right now... At this Microsoft Windows 10 Download Page

I indicated i would upgrade months ago, the day it came out i hit install, it did, no issues or problems yet.

Some are recommending to wait 'til October to upgrade, when a major update is expected to deal with initial release bugs and features they didn't have time to get to before the release deadline. Its free til July 2016 for upgrades (but since my desktop is pushing five years, I'm due for a new build and probably won't get to take advantage of that)

Upgrade now, create the installation disk, then you have Win 10 for every PC you own. I believe you can use the free version on multiple computers, provided the user is the same, so you can keep your old PC going with Win 10 while using the same installation on your new one.

I've always been an early adopter, I can handle a few crashes now and then.

Overall, the OS is good, the interface is far better than Win8.1, I'm using it on a Surface Pro 3 so touch is important.

A little buggy and a few items that make you think "why did they do that", such as having no combined inbox for multiple accounts on mail.

The new browser (Edge) is nice, works well but crashes a fair bit. I do love the ability to just scribble over web pages and then send it to someone so I may stick with it. Only problem is that there's no plug ins yet so no ad blockers or other such things.

They do seem to be trying to force Skype on you through Win 10 which annoys me slightly (even though I already used Skype).

Start menu is good, far more useable than the full screen effort in 8.1. I've actually gone to the bother of organising it properly, something I never did in all my time with 8.1.

Big issue for this audience mind you, Photoshop is reporting issues with the GPU driver and is disabling GPU support, this is making some plugins run SLOOOOWLY!

Still some issues around some programs scaling properly on super high def screens (such as Surface Pro 3) without a bit of tweaking. If you open something on your tablet screen (thinking Photoshop here) then drag it to your monitor all the fonts and interface are HUGE and take up pretty much half of your screen real estate, on a 24" monitor. The reverse also happens, if you open something on the monitor it comes up normally but if you then drag it ot your high res screen everything is really small. This also happened in Win 8.1 though so it's not a new thing.

Big plus is that it's back to the desktop way of working for everything. No more switching in and out of the desktop every time you want to use a Metro native app, anything can now share screen estate.

Overall, I'm pleased with the upgrade and happy to live with the bugs over the general annoyances of Win 8.1.

Ineresting... what graphics card are you running? I don't recall having that problem on my laptop when I was runnning the Tech. Preview late last year.

Yeh, that's a thorny little issue. Thing is, the application window can span more than one monitor, and/or components of it, like tool windows, can be placed on another monitor. Making the interface resize to just one monitor won't work in all cases. Not an easy problem to solve in a user-friendly manner...

It's the Surface Pro 3 Intel Integrated HD 4400 graphics card. Being a Microsoft device I would have thought they could get the drivers right, though maybe it's Photoshop not recognising the driver or some such thing. Saying that, when I started up Cortana for the first time it reported that my microphone wasn't supported, also Surface Pro 3 so who know, hopefully things they'll just sort in time.

The sharing apps over two screens thing ins't a big issue for me, with the small tablet screen next to a large monitor it doesn't really work well anyway, but like you say, a tricky one to sort. In my view it would just be best to disable scaling when an external monitor is attached, or at least have the option to so do.

Will update the laptop that has Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 ASAP. The laptop with Windows 7 will stay a Windows 7 machine until I know Windows 10 isn't a POC like Windows 8.

You can download it onto a flash drive and install it now.

i just went to the MS website, downloaded the "media build tool" and ran from desktop of the computers I upgraded. no waiting in line, just "upgrade existing system" option, it then downloads and runs the installer.
waiting in lines is for amusement parks...and ice cream; you can always justify waiting in line for ice cream ;)
