voter 11 to give someone a 1, can you please tell me why?
I drove 2 hours, did spend a whole day shooting (500 pictures, spent 2 days editing. used a model. setup lights in studio for some object.
Even you don't like it, at least look at the work it involves and DON'T VOTE. You are the kind of voters who makes people want to stop on DPC. Shame on you.

Georges, you HAVE no 1 votes. Your lowest vote is a 4. Statements like this are very unhelpful, they encourage lemming-like whining. And, as much as I sympathize with you, all that driving & all that work means absolutely nothing when it comes to evaluating your image. Please just accept the fact that the only meaningful score is the final average. No matter how gratifying the early votes may be, it's nearly impossible to hold on to an early 7+ average because even a 7 lowers your average :-(

But mathematically speaking, if you have a 7 score, a 7 vote can lower your average, but never lower than itself -- so the score would be held onto.

Little shocked you'd reveal that you can and do peek at votes though. That's a little disturbing. While I believe SC should have that ability, to use it to verify his perception and then to call him out on it. Publicly? Ouch.

Obviously his math shows a "1" vote. That could be a "4" with another three votes lowered by one. Reverse engineering scores is our only way to see where are votes are headed. So the net effect is he got one more vote and his vote total increased by "1" since he checked at 10 and 11. When someone changes a vote it's usually detected when the score changes but the vote count has not.

Regardless, the overall tone of his post and valid and I think does contribute to the site atmosphere. Maybe people will see it and realize that when they hit 1-2-3-4-5, whatever they might imagine, that according to the DPC voting scale, they are saying the photo is BAD.

Not that they didn't like it. That it's BAD.

Not that it was DNMC. That it's BAD.

It's right there on the voting page.

I still can calculate an average.
When at 9 votes I was at 7.33
at 10 votes I refreshed and it was at 7.4
I refreshed again and suddenly I am at 6.81 at 11 votes.
Calculating this makes that voter 11 gave me a 1.
I don't really care about the scores and votes, neither the comments.
It is just very discouraging to see this.
Maybe someone else adjusted the vote and at the same time another person gave a low vote.

Personally I don't care if you drove 500 hours, took 10,000 photos and spent a year editing the photo. If I don't like the photo my vote will reflect that. I also don't comment on photos that I gave a 1 to, unless it is one I feel did not meet the challenge.....in that case I will say something about not meeting the challenge but never mention that I gave it a one. Just as what ever photo I like the most from a challenge (which I always give my favorite image a 10 and I only give one 10 per challenge) I will say something about being my favorite but never mention that I gave it a 10. Actually most of the photos I comment on are those in my 4-7 range and I never mention the score I give.

I am a wildlife photographer and typically drive hours to get to a place before sunrise, which means getting up stupid early. Then spend the day in horrible conditions, sometimes even laying in ant beds or getting eaten up by chiggers, taking 1000's (not a measly 500) of photos and spending days going thru and culling/editing them. I do not expect anyone to take into account what I went thru to get that photo, I do expect them to vote on how well they like it and if they feel like leaving a comment I am most thankful.

sorry no sympathy here.

i spent an hour setting up lights and shooting, another hour of the models time, wardrobe purchases, another two hours editing and it was an utter failure.

no complaining here and it wont discourage me from entering something else. I bet if i entered it on 500px it would get fav'd like crazy.

I am happy with my blue score, but I fail to mention it I am sure the votes will hit the floor sooner..

It's fun :0))

It is higher than my other two challenges for sure!

as for the many hours spent, I can't tell ya how many countless hours I have driven or how many SD cards I have filled only to see less than a 5 score..Onward I go
I know there is not one person that I know of that is involved on this site who has not spent time on their image whether driving or time in editing..if you are one of those people please let me know so I can learn your secret, esp if you ribbon LOL. The hours are countless and unforgiving.. true we would all love to see higher than 6's but its not the reality for what it is. I love seeing how the creativity comes out on the challenges and the sharing of others work.. whether low scores or high scores, it is always inspiring for me all the way around.

Well, mine is doing far better than expected. I guess not being part of the DPL is a help. :)

The point to drive far and take a lot of pictures is not relevant to what I mean. I know that the time spent on a challenge entry doesn't reflect on getting higher votes. I have enough experience in this. Usually I do product photography but do not wish to get stick on this. that's why I love DPchallenge so much. That challenging thing makes me become more creative, way faster than without DPC. I see the creations of gyaban and other masters. And then you start appreciating them more when you "try" to do something similar.
How to react on the last comment I received on the opposites challenge? That person only left one comment (on my picture). I don't know what to think...
I am not paranoiac, but it's weird.

My votes for the Blue challenge are in. I gave four 10's and three 9's
Great images.

some of this sounds like Alton Brown on the Cutthrought Kitchen TV show:

"The judge does not know nor care what conditions you had to endure or the setbacks you experienced while preparing your dish. All that he cares about is does the dish meet the criteria for the challenge at hand and does he like it"

also, consider that some voters 'mark' images with extreme scores early on for the purpose of sorting (and maybe to get you to squeal with dismay in public) - and then they go back later and adjust when the buffer of more votes obscures the change.

I kind of do this. I separate the photos on my first pass into three different groups. The 5's typically stay 5, but I do go back thru them one last time, the other two I go thru to assign the numbers 1-4 and 6-9. I only give one 10 out per challenge and it goes to my favorite photo, I have given out two 10's a few occasions when I just could not decide between two photos. It may take me a few days to do all my voting and my procedure is not to make people mad, it is just what I found that works for me.

klkitchens, I have to comment on your interpretation of the voting scale.I totally disagree that 5 and under is a bad photo while 6 and up is a good photo. A score of 1 means a bad photo (or DNMC). A score of 10 means an excellent photo. Anything in between is part of a sliding scale. When I vote, I give a 5 for an "average" shot. Basically good, more than a snapshot but nothing to make it special. I go up and down from there depending on impact and creativity. DNMC shots typically get between 1 and 3.

I understand some people have their own interpretations and scales they go by. I'm just pointing out the fact of the scale.

As shown in the range, 1 is (BAD), 10 is (GOOD). Therefore 5.5 is the midpoint between bad and good. If a photo scores 5.5000 it is "average" based on the scale given for the site (not for the challenge). This means 5 is less than average and more bad than good. 6 is better than average, more good than bad. 4 is more bad than a 5, 7 is more good than a 6, etc...

Yes, it's a sliding scale from 2 to 9, but 5.5 IS the middle and is the average of the range allowed to be given on a single photo by a single voter. If you add all the numbers 1-10 you get 55/10 = 5.5.

So while people do have they own scale and can be consistent within it, your scale, my scale, Bear's scale, anyone else's scale is not the same. So the standard is the one the site presents to the voter. Sadly, we have no way to accurately adjust each voter's personal scale and "curve" their votes so that everyone is in some sort of synch.

You say you give a 5 to "average" photos. That's fine. You cannot give a 5.5 and neither can I. However, it still remains that 5 is on the "bad" half of the DPC scale.

I guess my problem with it is that you seem to have two choices: Bad or Good. Where is OK, average, not so bad but not great, better than average but not outstanding? 5.499 is on the lower end of the scale, but that does not make it bad, it just means there is room for improvement.

Well, anything but a 10 is "room for improvement" :)

This isn't a matter of "Kevin seems to have" it's just a fact of the 10 point scale they've give us to use. It's like when you take a survey and they say

Strongly Disagree
Disagree
Neither Agree or Disagree
Agree
Strongly Agree.

Even though that's only a 1-5 (ish) scale, it still compares. (in fact, that might even be a better scale to use "This is a good photo that meets the theme of the challenge: " SD D N A SA (1-5)

We'd at least get the same results:

Perhaps then if we allot 2 values to each and think along those lines where the question is as asked and the values at

1-2 Strongly Disagree
3-4 Disagree
5-6 Neither Agree nor Disagree
7-8 Agree
9-10 Strongly Agree

Then that gives a 2 point swing in each "bucket" to sub divide even further: of all those I strongly disagree with, these I do just a little bit more (1s) and these less (2s).

Very interesting... food for thought.

Perhaps I'll shovel out more 10s now :)

P.S. But still "ranking" with the numbers is bad :)

It seems every thread these day is destined to end up as a voting rant.

That aside, I just want through the Blue challenge and thought the standard was particularly high! Some very interesting and some very well done images. One or two were even a bit of both!
