On board games and video games your objective is to win no matter the cost right? So how many of you down vote other images in challenges that your entered it? For example I see a lot of 1's 2's and 3's on images that are clearly not worthy of them so I'm wondering who does this and who is willing to admit it?

I don't think there is anything wrong with it in nature because you want to make sure you image scores higher but does it make it okay for DPC? I guess what makes me think of this is the DPL. I see a lot of low scores on some damn good images.

I think it happens, but SC detection methods aren't perfect.

There's also the issue of what score an image "deserves". Your 10 may be my 1 and vice versa.

Photography is art and everyone has a different take on what they like. Have many times given a 1-3 on an image that made the front page and a 10 for an image that finished in the bottom 10. Some wonderful photos to me are DMC and get a 1, no matter how beautiful and perfect the photo is. I also have things that I just dislike in photography and those photos will get a much lower score.

It's all subjective...............

Threads like this always come up during DPL and get really F*#@ing old.

Edited to add......my average score for voting in the Road Sign challenge (have not voted on graveyard yet) was almost .5 higher then my normal............

As long as it is consistent, doesn't bother me a bit. I checked the images as well, I think voting actually is pretty normal... I mean even some of Gyabans images get 1s and 2s somehow.

Why people blame the leagues every year is beyond me... it was blamed last year as well and that was the only time I had received votes higher than 6.... I have always the same and consistently than the votes I get..

This question has been beaten to death by a horse more than once

I know 99% of my issues on why I get low votes is because of my learning to edit and the processing I give it lol only if I processed things different, but I am learning that and trying things.
I vote the same whether it is team league or not. Plus I have my favorites, my special mentions and my personal favorites. :_)

Avg Vote Cast: 6.3134

Avg Vote Received: 4.9728

Now to focus on the next challenge on what to do :-))

Does it happen? Sure it does. Is it common? No, it isn't (at least the intentional version). There is potentially an unintentional tendency to do this to a lesser degree, and it is statistically testable. If the effect is large, then the voting average for participants should always be lower than for all voters. This is not the case, though it is often the case. So I suspect that the unintentional effect is there. I also know that the intentional effect is there, and have documented it statistically. It's just not common, and woe be unto whomever gets caught doing it.

I know we all have our own way of voting and I am not saying I have an issue with it.

In your opinion... (who ever reads this...) do you think it's wrong to down vote other images in hopes to advance your own?

This image has more low votes than DPL photos...

I mean com'n... How could it have 2s and 3s... Even 4s and 5s?

I do not do that, and I find it reprehensible that people do this.

If you were running track, would you grab the jerseys of the other runners, or trip them? Of course not. Voting others lower is trying to create an unfair advantage, and assumes that the entrant is the only one bright enough to do it. If everyone does it, we are back to square one. So the ploy depends on everyone else being honest.

In my perfect world, DPL would not only prohibit you from voting on your team's entries, but all other team entries as well.

Do I like to win? I love it. Come play Trivia Crack sometime. But if it means being less than honest, or other schemes and skullduggery, then I am content to continue ribbon less.

Edited to correct auto-correct.

When I first started on the website, I thought that it was the case and people were trying to "adjust their vote" to get a better placement. Then I figured out that my photos just stunk after the 3rd challenge or so....

But I too would rather be ribbonless then try and adjust others votes to make mine better. I want to beat the best and feel accomplished when I finally do it (more than the one fluke I have had...)

He shot the exact same view for 4 separate challenges in a short time span; they were all being voted on consecutively, and there was a lot of overlap when 2-3 of the images were in voting at once. He got some scoring bounceback for that. He did it as an "experiment" to see what happens when you do just that, dispense a single killer scene repeatedly.

In LOUD, there are three photos that scored higher than 6, but I gave them a 2. I assure you, it was not so that my photo would place better.

Of course its wrong and SC has more than once punished those for doing it.. its hard on SC but with their work, honesty and integrity.. they are not stupid either and those people will be caught and punished. It is something I don't worry about :-)

Seriously... How far I can take my crappy photos by voting everyone 1?
However, if someone has 7+ during voting... that is a different story. He or she might not vote 1s or 2s but drop his or her voting to a lower level... possibly under consciously!

Tastes vary. Voting styles vary. A 10 for someone is a 1 for another, and vice versa. But we take "strategic" voting (intentionally voting low regardless of an image's merit) VERY seriously. It is a serious violation of TOS and will result in a suspension for anyone caught doing it. More than once and you'll be booted off the island.

How can we tell the difference? We have ways.....

MWAHAHAHA

I think there are a bunch of factors that go into voting and they all impact each other. I do believe having a photo in a challenge impacts how many people vote, particularly if their image is doing very well or much more poorly than expected as an emotional reaction to how your image is being perceived can impact how you look at other images. I think the DPL amplifies that more than is a cause in and of itself. For instance, you wake up on the first day of voting to see your image at 5.5 with 10 votes and then 5.2 10 votes later. If you immediately set yourself to voting there's more of a chance that you're going to vote measuring other images against yours and your perception of what your score should be - rightly or wrongly. But, wait a day and go into judging without looking at where you stand and you're almost always going to see things with different eyes.

I'd like to believe that everyone's judgement is pure for each challenge, but I'm not naive enough to think it is, and I'm not jaded enough to think that when it's not that it's purposefully malicious. I'm thankful for those who do vote consistently. I know I try to, and I've walked away from voting when I find myself thinking about how an image compares to mine instead of just thinking about the image.

I need to look into this Trivia Crack. Candy Crush is getting old and Plant vs Zombies is getting hard.

i dont think it happens as much as you would think, for one, it doesn't really make a difference, my one vote isn't going to help me ribbon or place higher if nobody else's likes my image.

i will compare other images to mine if i think its particularity strong though, but i'm also a realist, its not often I have an image i think is better than the others.

Its only addicting when your winning, not so much when you lose all the time... (trust me I know.... =) )

The only reason I don't find it disturbing is because in order to be disturbed by it I'd also have to be disturbed by a 1-10 scale that is based on nothing but the whim of the voter, and no justification has to ever be given when someone thinks so little of an image that they can leave a 1 or 2 with no comment. I used to find it disturbing, until I decided I had to make a choice between either leaving or disregarding the justification of others' numbers. I'm still here.

I have no problem whatsoever of someone thinking a picture is 1 or 2. Art is subjective. What I find disturbing is that (and I may certainly be reading it wrong) it sounds like he has no problem in voting down a picture you might otherwise not in the spirit of competition.
