Who are your current photographers of interest? Post them here.

I’m always looking for inspiration; an idea that encourages me to go take my camera for a walk. These could be well known photographers, somebody whose stuff you stumbled upon, or a fellow DPCer.

As of late, I’ve been looking through the work of Bruce Davidson and Alex Webb. Bruce likes to spend months or years with his subjects which I feel isn’t done enough. He wanted to learn more about his subjects and potentially himself. Alex captures these amazing compositions and handles color so well. Black and white comes more natural than color for me. I’d like to compose more images with color in mind but it’s challenging.

Well since it is a current challenge, Mary Ellen Marks is pretty fascinating.

I first saw her work in the Times on her piece in homeless kids in Seattle. Here is a link to her piece in LIFE. She did several long pieces on people on the margins of society and spent serious time with her subjects to give the viewers a deep insight.
Then the weird part. She spent a lot of time as the official photographer on movie sets like Apocalypse Now taking shots of glamorous people in character. The ability to move with equal skill between two such different worlds and roles, I find fascinating.

I used to follow this photographer until the restraining order was put in place.

It's a thread started and populated for a couple years by Man_Called_Horse, and GeneralE added to it after Horse left us.

It's called "The Photographer"

In all seriousness, one photographer who I sorely miss around here is Silverfoxx. I think she was easily one of the most talented, unique and inspiring photogs ever on DPC. I tried to follow her after her absence here but it was like she disappeared. From what I could tell (though I'm not positive) she seemed to suffer some leg or knee injury that hampered her love of dance. I don't suppose anyone knows if she ever continued her pursuit of photography or has a website link to her?

She's still in my favorites list and I always enjoyed her work. I like her ability to raise questions and tell a story with her images. How does she influence your photography or is it just interesting stuff?

My intention with this forum was to see what inspires and influences your photography. Who you are leaning on or stealing from. It would be really interesting to see these influences in your own work. I understand some wouldn't want to reveal this information but in visual arts we are all influenced be something we see.

I hear you on Bruce Davidson - one of my favourites.

Recently i've been really getting into Saul Lieter, particularly all that early colour stuff of his but his black and white work is great as well. This book is my most recent photo book buy which came a couple of days ago and it's got a good selection of his work including his fashion stuff and his paintings.

Another recent buy was a photo book of photos by the Swedish photographer Sune Jonsson whose black and white images of rural Sweden in the mid 20th century is a world away from Lieter's colour street work in America during the same period, but is just as amazing. I got this book on Johnsson.

I must have a thing about Swedish photographers as the other book i bought recently was one of the photographs of Christer Strömholm. Working around the same time as Lieter and Jonsson, Strömholm took some amazing black and white portraiture and documentary photography particularly of the transexual community in Paris in the 1950's. Strömholm worked very much in the vein of Bruce Davidson in that he got to know, and become friends with, his subjects over long periods of time. This is the book i got.

So, three photographers all working during the same decades in different parts of the world, all sadly no longer with us (all three died in the last 10-15 years or so), and all producing vastly differing bodies of work but all three utterly fantastic.

He's long been my favourite photographer - I have several of his books. In case you haven't seen it, this is a good movie about him. In no great hurry

One photographer I thoroughly enjoy looking at is Susan Burnstine. She also has a slot in the UK B&W magazine on a monthly basis. I suspect there are one or two people around these here parts who would also enjoy her work.

Alex Webb, also someone I've been following recently. And for landscape, I love Nadav Kander, although hate his website so won't link it here.

Thanks for the link Sarah. I'll definitely try and have a watch soon.

Yes, indeed, Sarah Burnstine is fabulous. Very reminiscent of Keith Carter who is equally fantastic.

From Susan's website:

"Susan Burnstine portrays her dream-like visions entirely in-camera, rather than with post-processing manipulations. To achieve this, she created twenty-one hand-made film cameras and lenses that are frequently unpredictable and technically challenging. The cameras are primarily made out of plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects and the single element lenses are molded out of plastic and rubber. Learning to overcome their extensive limitations has her to rely on instinct and intuition... the same tools that are key when trusting in the unseen."

A joy to browse through her stuff.

I have one of Saul's books too. Interesting to see some common photographers of interest.

I love this thread.
Clive introduced Martin Parr to me a while ago.
I do not have favorites but look for instance with enormous pleasure to:

Abelardo Morell

Laura Letisky

A word of caution: I saw a recent A.Morell show in NYC and the pictures were very big and to me they lost the amazing magic that the give when looking at them in his books.
I love all the ones you mentioned here.

Besides the ones already mentioned (Abelardo Morell is awesome), a recent fave is Fan Ho.

He has a website, but when I try to paste the link, my browser crashes.

My all time favorite is Imogen Cunningham. I had the good fortune to meet her in her extreme old age and she was still electrifying.
