I just completed my 800th challenge! I hope that I have returned at least a small portion of input into other people's photographic lives as they have in mine here in DPC World.

I have a business doing photography... mostly families and high school seniors. I don't know if... I'm POSITIVE that I'd not be making money from my passion... my joy... without the harsh, sweet, wrong, right, hard-to-take, spot-on critiques that the peeps here on DPC have given to me... and... made me THINK.

THINK about every single comment. Most I agreed with... after the fact and I saw what they saw... some I didn't agree with ... and that made me think... and made me more secure about my ideas... Some... just encouraged me. But, ALL of them made me THINK about my images.

Thank you BUNCHES for that!

DPC. It Rocks.

So... THIS is what drives me to leave "not so fun" comments when I see stuff that I think could be improved. It's because I've always wanted to learn... and... my family and friends won't tell me the truth about my images. *sigh*

Ha.

But, I've been hesitant to give a critique lately... that's less than glowingly positive... because I've gotten some feedback...

So, I'd LOVE IT if there were some way to know that the entry's photographer was ASKING for 'real' critiques... wanting to know what to improve upon.

I'd check that box. That's how I am where I am in my mediocre world of photography. I was WAY so much lower... until DPC helped.

So... there has to be a way for the folks who helped me get here... instead of "there" (much worse)... to know that I still BEG FOR COMMENTS TO HELP ME GROW!

Unfortunately... I don't give the comments I'd like to give, because of the backlash I've gotten giving what I thought was honest, and kind feedback.

If there were a way to know (before giving input) if the photographer wanted honest, encouraging, sometimes difficult feedback... before we're asked to give feedback, that would be THE ONE thing I'd like to see added to this site.

I think it would grow the site in a way that it's never been grown before. People would flock to the site... knowing that they would get honest feedback (as we used to be given before people... like me... grew too uninterested in the giving of critiques because of the feedback from those honest critiques).

The ones who don't want feedback would feel free to express their artistic side... without being offended by others' unwanted critiques.

The ones who WANT to give feedback, but have been injured... or are afraid of being injured by backlash... will feel free to give critique to help others.

Win.

Win.

Win.

I would check the 'all comments appreciated' button.

Many times I know at least some of my photos weaknesses, but on some photos I really do try hard to get right and I know people have great critique to offer.

i've gotten those angry emails about comments, i dont let it stop me from saying what i think about the picture, you learn as much from the comments you give as from the ones you get, don't let people stop you from learning

Congratulations on the milestone!

However, I've never understood the "problem" some people have with responses to their comments. If someone disagrees with you, so what? And if they are unacceptably rude, report them via a ticket and we will deal with it as a TOS violation. (Perhaps you can send me an example of a comment and the response which would make you not want to comment again ...)

I want to encourage you (and everyone) to continue to voice their honest opinion about the photos posted here.

Lydia, congratulations on the milestone.

Your photo-notes are always a treat to look forward too. So even if you stop commenting, we'll enjoy those straight-forward quips.

Have you taken out a trade-mark on your sigh yet?

I do agree with the General though, don't let other people's problems spoil our joy on receiving your comments.

The reasons to ever engage with a commenter should be to thank him/her for voicing an opinion, or to learn more by asking for further assistance. Shame on the spoilers, who are depriving us of Lydia's scribblings, which going by my own experience, have always been streets better than my own.

And go check your profile page -- I have "inside knowledge" that you may find some additional DPC bling there ... :-)

Congratulations on the milestone and great body of work.

I, for one, am always happy to get a Lydia comment. They are always both honest and sincere -- and I've got to respect that.

I guess one option would be to include a 'code' in our titles so those wanting critiques can be ID'd eg a star. Instead of just a title like 'Blue' you could call it : * Blue

A simple symbol representing a wish for a critique without detracting from title could work once word got round about what it meant?

Awww... you peeps are the best! Thanks bunches for your loving words!

@ Ellie, yes! Please do that! That would be great! And might get the attention of Langdon and convince him to give us a box to checkmark. :D

Congratulations Lydia
I just scrolled through your portfolio and was reminded of how creative and original your work is.
I too remember every critique I have ever gotten here and I have learned so much from them.
Why don't we put a little asterisk * (top of the numeral 8) before the title of our image.
That means "I welcome all critiques and comments.

Great job, Lydia. You're the best!

Awww... I love these comments.

I was just telling a friend today about when I'd been dreaming about getting my first Top Ten. A Little Black STAR of my own!

I finally got it... and I was SO thrilled... I asked my family almost... every hour... "Did you know that I got a little black star?" For DAYS.

Almost every hour. For days. Many of them.

I was so thrilled.

And... the best part of it was my family didn't kick me out. They were as thrilled as I was.

I'm still very thrilled with a little black star.

I want more.

*grin*
