I offer this idea to increase participation. a Lottery.

members only, $5 added to your yearly membership if you want to play, so its optional.

3 winners, we could do gift cards or photo related actual prizes.

rules:

# chances to win is based on participation

25 for each challenge you enter
5 each challenge you vote 95% (not 100 since some dont vote on entries the have seen or know)
1 for each comment

placement in a challenge does not increases your chances to win, it's incentive only

if Langdon wont implement it, I'm sure we could do it amongst ourselves.

feel free to discuss and offer modifications, we need to make this happen.

Doesn't a "lottery" require an element of chance... luck... usually has a draw of some type.

How does ones accumulated score factor into the lottery. Perhaps for every 100 points, your name goes into the barrel for the draw. So someone with 1000 points has 10 entries in the barrel.

If you're suggesting 3 participants with the highest score at the end on the year win, you'd probably see an initial spike in participation which would taper when people realise they have little to no chance of catching the leaders.

I'm in favour of the concept, though not the cost/cash prize associated. Perhaps if there was no cost to enter, and a years membership was on offer?

i'm suggesting what you said. you get the following # of chances entered into random draw:

25 for each challenge you enter
5 each challenge you vote 95% (not 100 since some dont vote on entries the have seen or know)
1 for each comment

3 people chosen randomly for three prizes.

Sounds good to me. I already enter every challenge and though voting and commenting 100% was very time consuming, I'd probably start again if we did this.

i thought about that, but I wasn't sure if that would be incentive enough to raise participation levels.

Your system may result in a greater number of entries, greater number of votes and greater number of comments but what the quality of these incentive driven entries, votes and comments are is questionable.

I suspect a key factor preventing people entering, voting and commenting is lack of time. A small incentive would not magically solve this lack of time but I suppose could persuade people to devote more time to DPC. A years member ship is so cheap and therefore unlikely to be a huge incentive to spend an extra few hours every week.

I was wondering if reducing the frequency of challenges would result in more entries, more votes and more comments though this would have a knock on effect of reducing the frequency of the different challenge types so probably not a great idea.

Being a member of this fine community is all the reward I need.

How about workshop space?

Some incentive I believe would benefit the participation.

I don't think lack of time is the problem.

Perhaps not for retired people but for those with a full time job and a family I would imagine it may be a factor. Apologies if I am completely off the mark

does it matter? a comment is a comment, even if it starts out as "great shot" or "lovely". it may spur more elaborate comments more often then they are given now. Its also the reason i weighted it low, because you cant control the quality of the comments.

i think DPL and TPL have proven that incentive (albeit not necessarily monetary) dramatically improves participation.

And some of us with full-time job and a family don't think a year's DPC membership is "so cheap". Yes time is an issue... and is the main reason there have been periods that my involvment in DPC has dropped-off at times.

The people who have no spare time have no spare time.

Just like the people who have no money have no money.

Great idea but I would go for portfolio space :-))

I don't think money is needed to bribe people into participation. Just make more (some? any?) challenges that are about photography, and fewer challenges that are about photoshop.

great idea.

how bout to simplify.

1 ticket for each entry.
1 ticket each challenge voted over 75%.
3 tickets comment 75%.
----- so you can get 5 per challenge.

(or your original idea)

eta- that might not weight commenting heavily enough.

You would need to bribe me to participate at that place.
