I would rephrase that to "every urban area has it", rural areas, not so much.

In the UK at least, if it is large enough to be a town, as opposed to a village, then it is large enough to have graffiti. I live in a very small village in a rural area and i'd be hard pushed to find some but there is a stone nearby, up in a secluded valley, called the Devil's Stone which has graffiti from shepherds dating back 400 years or so. It's called the Devils Stone because Satan left his mark on it centuries ago so i guess that counts as grafitti as well.

I live out in the country, in a rural-ish area but I get this:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/35000-39999/35804/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1147787.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/35000-39999/35804/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1147787.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I just walk out my backdoor, take a short walk through some woods and voila...it's a moving art exhibit, a very fast moving exhibit at that. I also find graffiti up in the mountains, as gross as that is.

I hate graffiti but it would make for an interesting challenge. The worst graffiti I ever saw was in Bologna and Milan, such a shame the Italian Govt obviously doesn't have the money or the inclination to remove it, it really cheapens a city.

I love graffiti. The more childish, badly drawn and irresponsible the better. We live in a world where if you have a lot of money, or if you are a large company with a lot of money, then it is perfectly acceptable to put up huge billboards and adverts everywhere selling whatever crap you want to sell, invading peoples spaces where they live and play. Ugly corporate art everywhere. Gentrification of large swathes of cities abound. The more badly drawn penises the better i say.

I particularly like this quote by Banksy...

'People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply youíre not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. Itís yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially donít owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, donít even start asking for theirs.
