I've not seen a collection of images taken so poorly in quite a while. Come on people, use a tripod, focus on your subject, get your white balance correct, set up composition nicely, and frame it well. This batch of images, for the most part, looks like people just went in their kitchen and shot their leftovers.

I'm done voting, and didn't give anything higher than a 7.

I want to quote Mark Twain, then run away.

There are definitely some that are as you describe, but at least 12 or 13 real gems that deserve a much higher score. Just MHO.

7 is good...

I just took a quick perusal of the entries and there are a few, maybe not 12 or 13, that stand out. I think there's a lot of good creativity if not good execution amongst the entries.

I don't have an entry, however, if I have time will probably vote and comment.

I think the main turn off of some of the images is the subject matter, placed well in the composition or not.

My 2 cents.

I hope you will leave lots of comments then on how people can improve.

I am having a hard time making myself not vote down for gross subject matter. I am really trying not to let that influence me but it is difficult.

Definitely. Good on ya for making the effort.

Danny, I am trying not to take it personal but it is hard... as I was planning my shot, thinking what and how and I needed to reshoot it as I was not happy with the first version. So it was in no way a kitchen snapshot. And I think that I am not alone who put a lot of effords into this challenge.

I think there was a broader spectrum of entries in all aspects, even though technically excellent shots were few in number. Although some of the execution could have been better, there is a lot of creativity and humor in this group, and that makes voting fun. I would also agree that there were some truly disgusting images. Eeeeewww! The challenge description included the word, "tastefully" did it not?

BTW- Everybody can give me a 7. I don't mind at all. ;-)

I am stunned to so so many weak shots...many great ideas but poorly delivered.

I am often tempted to comment on the general low quality input of entries on many challenges, but I refrain out of fairness to those who do make proper preparation and turn in good shots.

These subjects, like chocolate, invite an almost pig-out attitude but this is never so for all images. The name is wacky and as such the subject matter is not meant to please but rather recoil.

These challenges elude my reasoning while others are very comfortable. My point is that all images with poor craftmanship will suffer their usual fate while the good ones will often rise to the top. However, when a challenge is beset by a preponderance of sub-par images it turns the voting experience into a fishing expedition. Often, some give up and refuse to fish any further for good images.

Well, this is the nature and my humble advise is to fish when you have to if only to do justice to those who have a gem hid in the pile.

There are some great ideas in this challenge, but many of them are poorly composed, poorly lit or soft focused. that's sad because there are some concepts that really made me smile...but are so technically weak that they just can't be given a good mark.

Eloquently put, Daniel.

Well, the challenge was for "wacky" foods, not "gross, disgusting, make me wanna hurl" foods. I only see a few that are "wacky" in the zany, goofy, silly sense of the word. I have to agree with Danny. I have yet to vote, so I have some time to figure out just how I want to determine what meets the challenge and what doesn't. I am disappointed with myself for not entering because I might have been able to pull of a decent score in this one. :o)

Well if the shots really are so bad on average... I'm hoping I get comments about technically why, rather than the usual "I like it" "I don't like it".

Though I'm happy with how my shot turned out... considering it was a last minute shot... in a dimly lit dorm room, and it amazingly looked respectible.

OK, so I am taking it personally too.

I did planed the shot. I used a tripod, focus on the subject, thought it was framed well. Oh, And it was far away from leftovers.
I actually had to go out and buy the fruits!!

What is so amazing is that I only got 3 comments, and they are all good. So if the shot is so bad, please feel free to leave a comment telling me what is so wrong with it. ):

You were also asked to take into account the international nature of this site, which in my opinion should also apply to the voting. Don't assume everybody around the world has the same understanding of the word "wacky".

the description elaborated with "food you don't see everyday".

And what might be everyday for you, might not be for others in the world. In my opinion only really internationally well known food would not meet the challenge, so I am going to be gentle on this one and concentrate on image quality more.

This is the worst competition I have seen in here.... I have checked out a lot of the old competitions and this one beats it all I think... 3 pictures over 7 for me....

Dang...

Yeah - I have to say that I'm slightly disapointed. It took me a good while to figure out what to photograph, and then a few days more to figure out how to execute it. Then, I had to drive (last minute) in a rain storm from a tropical storm to the place where I could achieve the shot. So saying that you couldn't score me above a 7 - even knowing that you don't know what my shot was - saying that there was little effort, when you don't know what the effort was, is wrong.

I too have received nothing but good comments though my score is low. If you don't like my shot, tell me why.

Good point. I will spend time over the weekend doing so.

I learned a long time ago, that effort doesn't merit a higher score. I have plenty of entries in which I put a lot of effort into the shot, but received an average score. What makes a good score, as we all know, is well executed, on theme shots.
