I'm in. May not have as much time as I did last year, but I'll try to get out as often as I can.

For North America, I recommend the Peterson's Guides. I was a complete neophyte a year ago and found them to be great to learn with.

I have both Peterson's and Stokes they are both good, Stokes has real pictures as opposed to illustrations.

The Kaufman Field Guide doesn't get talked about much, but if you're looking for a book (not an app) they've created one that I'll go to first. Like Stokes they use photographs instead of illustrations, but they have used digital technology to enhance those photos (just like we do) so that you get look of a photo with the feel of an illustration in all its perfectly lit brilliance. When we were just getting into birding we were visiting the Cape May Bird Observatory here in NJ and ran into Pete Dunne, who is the director of the observatory and founder of the World Series of Birding. He saw us looking at field guides in the store and he grabbed the Kaufman and gave it to us saying that it's the best one available if you don't want to weed through bunches of photos of each species (we'd also purchased binoculars, so it wasn't exactly "free"). Worth checking out and owning, even if you have others.

Anyone up for a little bird ID while we're on the field guide topic?
To me the hardest birds to ID are the little shorebirds and Warblers.

I took this 2 days ago I think I have it nailed down but maybe you guys can take a shot at it.

I was taken on the NY shore line.

My guess is in the Plover family. But, not sure of the exact one yet.

That's what I thought originally but now I think it's a white rumped sandpiper. It has the black legs and the white white eyebrow.

The beaks don't match up. The sandpiper has a slightly longer and more slender beak. All of the Plovers have a sort of snubbed end of the beak. Plus the tail colors don't quite match the image I am seeing on the Sibley birds app or real images on the net. My best and final guess is a female Wilson's Plover.

That's what I get for hurrying through the pics in the app - it didn't match the adult but it matches the Juvenile for the White-rumped. That's what you've got!!

And Dennis, some sandpipers share the smaller beaks the plovers have. What you don't get with the plovers are the dappling in the feathering you see here - plovers tend to be far more solid color where they have it, particularly those on the east coast of the US.

Are we going to use this thread or a new thread for the listings?

I will try and jump in here. I'll get some practice in with my iPhone telephoto lens. My feeders are up and running again and my bird population is growing.

Nope, this will be signup only. I'll post a new thread for pics, and send everybody a link to it as well as place it in this thread at the top. Thread will be created around midnight US Mountain Standard time (aka my time).

Everybody that has expressed interest should be listed at the top. If I missed you, please let me know.
