I don't think that's how Christophe meant it; remember, English is not his first language. I think he meant to say, if you don't want to look at/deal with an expert challenge, find something else to look at while it's up and running. I'm quite sure he didn't mean to say "If you don't like all these expert challenges, go find a different playground and take a hike."

What I am trying to say is, if you strongly dislike something, why lose your time with it at all? What would be the point? Masochism? It is not like there are no alternatives, even on DPC itself (there are still 3x more "non expert challenges" than "expert ones"!), so it seems a bit strange to keep militating against it. Life is so short, so full of constraints, why not simply enjoying what you can and let the different stuff exist too?

Dpc is serving buffet for everyone. Just grab the Orange if you donít like this one ;)

Ooooh, sarcasm from the new daddy!!

Although I don't agree with the "go elsewhere" part, no one is forced to enter any challenge, or forced to use elaborate processing techniques. But the expert rule set ALLOWS us to.

The main complaint always seems to be that it somehow bestows an unfair advantage on a privileged few. That would certainly be true if only those few were permitted to use that rule set. But there are people who work very hard at specific techniques.

Such is the case with dancers, or water drops, or landscapes, or wildlife, or squirrels, or, or... the people who practice their craft the most will likely win any challenge specializing in their chosen area, no matter how hard we try to compete. Yet there's no bellyaching about their "unfair" advantage. And isn't this site all about trying something new?

Very few of us have access to, and knowledge about, everything. So some will always have an "unfair" advantage in any given challenge.

I hate mushrooms, when I go a salad bar buffet I get so freaking pissed off there are mushrooms available for some people. Really, f**king mushrooms. Seeing those things available just ruins my appetite. I cant even stomach watching you put them on your salad and then eat them! It's gross. I feel like I'm going to be sick. It should be forbidden for people who like mushrooms to be able to put them on their salad because I dont like them. Seriously, its f**ked up. I dont care if we both paid for this goddamn salad bar and I dont want you to have the option to put mushrooms on your salad because they disgust me. In fact why are there so many of them? a big huge bowl of mushrooms available as a topping, if they got rid of the mushrooms there would be more room for more croutons. Croutons are awesome. I wish we only had croutons available, everyone who eats here should only be able to put croutons on their salad since thats the only topping worth putting on, who cares if you like mushrooms, go eat somewhere else, they should only serve croutons here.

I was just going to start a thread asking with why can't there be more 'minimal editing' challenges. I would love to see at least one a week for people like me who would like to spend less time sitting on my ass in front of the computer (do that all week) and more time spent in the field. I find it to be a healthier lifestyle. Bring on some basic or minimal challenges PLEASE!

It seems our OP is threatening spend a lot of very low votes in Expert challenges.

How is an Expert challenge cutting down on your time in the field? How is it telling you what to do at all?
02/18/2015 12:31:26 PM · #34
It doesn't cut down on my time one bit. I would just like to be part of the Challenges at least once a week and for that I would enjoy seeing a 'Basic' or 'Minimal' editing challenge. They are far and few between.
02/18/2015 12:35:50 PM · #35
As always then just do your images using those rules, what is the problem with that ?
02/18/2015 12:36:49 PM · #36
Some people are upset by things that fall outside of their narrow perceptions of 'how things should be'. Sometimes they post here about it, sometimes they make overtly negative comments on images and sometimes they share their disgruntlement with dishing out their scores of 1 with monotonous regularity.

And sometimes people react (understandably) to the cumulative effect of such people by making a well considered and targeted reply in forums such as this.

Such is life. Such is DPC.

It's really easy to be a 'wet blanket' - and a bit self indulgent too. It's a choice and I for one am not convinced that such a choice is always absent of malice.

Basic & minimal editing is part of every rule set. Every single one. There ain't nothing stopping you from entering any challenge you like.

Very true Pixelpig! Then why even have 'Basic' or 'Minimal' editing? If it is there, why not put it
to use like the others? It takes a certain skill set also.

I hate soccer. I really hate it. Those guys keep falling on purpose, running after a stupid ball, applauded by clueless viewers: pathetic. Unfortunately, TV keeps broadcasting games, several evenings per week! It was driving me crazy: to be forced to watch that stuff, year after year, was a nightmare. I still hear myself yelling in front of the TV: "please show us some good movie instead!" or "I don't care some like it, they are all imbeciles!" (or even things way more rude that I am too shy to write about).

Then, one blessed day, I found a solution. It was very, very tricky, but it worked beautifully: I found out that my TV set came with a remote control, and... it let me change the channel! So unexpected, so incredible. It was the happiest day of my life. From that day, I always managed to avoid soccer: it is like it doesn't even exist :-)

Now of course, I don't know if this could work for you: the Internet is a very small place (I am not sure whether other websites even exist?). But who knows, you could give it a try: maybe you could find good stuff to look at somewhere else, making your life beautiful again. Best of luck!

Didn't seem to me the OP deserved that, just looked like an innocent enough observation/question. But, hey, that's the internet for you nowadays, everyone is a keyboard warrior....

You mean as opposed to the OP's original whiny post???

If he doesn't want to enter Expert challenges, then DON'T! The OP has been here long enough that he truly knows better than to start this kind of thread in the first place, so what's the deal?

Personally, I thought Christophe's reply was much too eloquent to call snarky. If you decide you need to define elsewhere as off site as opposed to a challenge more suited to your tastes, then that's on you. I know I've certainly got the sh*ts of people bitching that this or that doesn't suit them......just STFU already, and move on. Don't want to participate in an Expert challenge? Don't! Don't like the challenge topic? Don't enter that challenge. Hate the Rant forum? Turn it off! But think of someone other than yourself before you start another self-serving indulgent thread just because you didn't get your way.

Now......did you like Christophe's gentle way, or do you like being slapped?

ETA: I am truly amazed and delighted to look at the entries in the Expert challenges. I'm fascinated with the inspiration, skill and execution of those who can really do it well. Maybe it would be interesting to wonder and really appreciate someone's talent and efforts for what they are, and be grateful. Christophe takes a lot of time to explain what and how he does his magic, and that's pretty darn thoughtful and nice. He seems to be under the impression that there are people here who might want to learn, and are happy to read the details of how he arrived at his latest masterpiece. Love it or hate it technique-wise, the man is incredibly talented, and we're lucky to have him here.

ETA Again: His average vote received is 6.9xxx. I'm guessing his supporters are more numerous than his detractors.

Those who are disinclined to spend time editing their shots tend to be similarly disinclined to compete against those who don't share that disinclination. They seem to want to compete against only other photographers like them. This is not a good site for that. You are the only photographer like you there is. You are always competing against yourself, first. Then other people. In any challenge. People say that a Minimal challenge forces people to concentrate on good camera work. How is that different from any other challenge? It's always important to get it right in camera. Those who don't enjoy editing their photos seems to think that it's possible to use PP to cheat & turn a bad photo into a good one. Nothing can turn a bad photo into a good one. These threads against Expert challenges and for more Basic/Minimal challenges are destructive to morale--they suck all the good spirit out of this site.

Just try suggesting a landscape challenge in Minimal. See how far that one flies. Let the landscape photographers talk about getting it right in camera--in one shot, no editing-- for a change.

How many narcissists does it take to change a light bulb? Just one. But it takes a really long time because he's standing there waiting for the world to revolve around him.

Personally, I would like to see more basic and minimal challenges. Limiting the tools often inspires more creative results.

Maybe telling people not to voice their opinions in the forum is just as bad ...

My entry in the Steampunk challenge is doing just fine and I essentially did nothing more than what would be allowed in Advanced. Truth is, I think some of the stacking and compositing that folks feel obligated to do in an Expert challenge often detracts from the image. Just because you're allowed to use a technique doesn't mean you have to - and you should probably avoid it if your skills aren't up to it. I had to chuckle at one of the comments I received because it complements me on my composite technique - something I didn't do on the photo.

I don't agree with this statement especially on this site. This is where I come to try to improve my skills, especially in expert editing. I am learning as I go and having so much fun doing it and getting any feedback is great, even if its not so much in the comments area but only in the score. I do agree that in some cases the stacking may not help the image and not everyone's technique is up to it but it never will be if they don't try. So I am hoping that the site continues to offer expert editing challenges. It has been said before but you can enter an image that is advanced if you want.

And you have the proper attitude about using challenges to improve your skills. However, I've learned that you can't be honest with some people regarding their grasp of a particular method when commenting, no matter how positively you try and word the criticism and offer advice. I have no problem with someone using it to expand their skill set as long as they have no issue with my pointing out where they have failed to execute it, particularly when I have no idea whose photo it is and if this is your 1st or 101st attempt at a technique. You want a pat on the back and an attaboy then stay in your comfort zone.

I don't know why, but often in these type of debate threads I feel like you're posts are typed with you yelling what you type out loud. I didn't take the OP as whiny and that's why I posted my response. And I never had a personal problem with Gyaban, I'm neither a supporter nor detractor for him, just didn't care for what I thought was the tone of his reply. But I guess, as you so eloquently put it, I should just "stfu" and move on.
